Clowne Towns Polly 'Swings' Marehay Away!
19/06/04
At Clowne

Marehay arrived at Clowne and would find that the ground has been pissed on from a great height, all day on Friday. The pitch would therefore be slow and 150 would be a very useful par score. Clowne won the toss and little Ben Holmes had no hesitation in opting to bowl.

Dave Swannack struck in his opening over producing a real brute which bounced and left the batsmen, who could only snick it through to Chigger. Caulton gone for a duck. In Leeroy’s next over Daz Brown (1) drove at a full outswinger and was picked up by Chalkie White, flying majestically through the air at backward point. Lanyon (7) then smashed Steve Bennett’s offie down Anil Womble’s throat at cover. Josh coughed the ball into his own hand for what would be the first of his three catches in this position. Old man Swanny then bagged skipper Neil Wilby for a good 19 caught at cover (yes by the mard-arse again) off a ball that just wasn’t there to drive. Walkers (2) also smashed a half volley to Josh at cover off Neil Pollard, whose introduction to the attack would prove crucial. Officer Peel quickly had Ford (8) caught by Charlie Maggot off a perfect away swinger, before bowling Durrant off an inside edge for a duck. Ermintrude Parsons was bowling tightly at the other end, but with no luck. At seven down Marehay finally put together a meaningful partnership. Youngster Kyte (21) chanced his arm, while veteran John Longdon (33 n.o) batted with an authority which showed his years playing at a higher standard. Not to be deterred, Orange bowled Kyte with the new legendary “Saturday night scuttle ball” and two balls later got one to bounce and Smallico managed to cling onto a flier (well absolute dolly!) at second slip. Kerry gone for a duck. Polly ended the innings with a classic late in ducker to bowl Mick Buckley for another quack quack, finishing with superb figures of 10-1-33-6. Swanny was also superb with 3-18.

Marehay ~ 110 All out

Clowne went out to bat for eight overs decided to (learning from Langley Mill’s mistakes) play some shots. Smalley and White hit two boundaries a piece and put on 24 in 5 overs before Smalley was undone by a lack of bounce for 10. Still, the little flier had been achieved and Clowne went into another excellent tea (thanks to Jackie and Amanda again) feeling very confident. After tea Chalkie and Chris Hendley quietened the Marehay players with an excellent stand of fifty. The kitten batted much more freely than in previous matches, looking very elegant and stylish, in a season where he is beginning to fulfil his undoubted potential. He stroked six boundaries before been trapped in front by Langdon for 44 off 70 balls. Fingers was more cautious, providing a vital anchor role and looking rock solid until he was also trapped by Langdon for 16 off 61 balls. Chigger had made a quick 14 before being unluckily bowled by Brown off various body parts. At this point 16 were needed. Was there a collapse imminent? The answer was a resounding ‘no’, as Nige Spencer 4 n.o and young Josh 12 n.o (all boundaries) spanked the winning runs. Another exciting game of cricket played in good spirits, with this young Clowne side (apart from old git Swannack!) again showing their potential and fighting spirit.

Clowne Town ~ 111-4
