Kirkby won the toss and elected to bat on grass for a change this week. The cravat wearing Mr Jones (not a sight you see every day but he looked smart) opened with Chamberlian. Linacre’s policy was to ball nearly all and with interesting results. G Wood was unrewarded with 5 for 16 and T cook 4 0 0 13. Twiggy bowled the second longest over in history with many many wides etc causing the bat to nearly out his back out reaching. Interesting tactic. R Gibbs bowled well for 5 2 0 23. All along Mr Jones was scoring well. The final combinations brought on Kinsey and Steers and Greveson. Joe gave good flight and caused problems returning a creditable 7 1 3 31 Steers was as fast as ever and had the inform Jones in trouble several times before finally winning the little personal battle to clean bowl the old fella for a well deserved 104. (after being hit for a couple of good 4’s) Its battles like this that Dale must win to progress in the game and he showed maturity beyond his years with his bowling. 7 0 3 28. Greveson returned 7 0 1 35 in an average display along side Steers. Mr Jones was the pick of their batting with a good 104

192 for 7

Linacre and Steers opened. Linacre set about the bowling attack like a man possessed. He stood tall in the centre and wielded the 3lbs of finest English willow with a mighty display of powerful pulls and devastating drives. The ball was being dispatched to all parts of the field to the bowler’s disgust. Steers at the other end was also enjoying the battle and had his share of the runs but could not match the ferocity of Linacre. The partnership was 133 from only 21 overs when Steers (a well batted 45) was caught from Chamberlain. Lowton, Kinsey and Greveson came to support the captain as he relentlessly smashed, placed and cajoled the ball all over the place. The young bowlers were given a stark taste of what to expect at senior level and dropped their heads complaining of cross ball pulls. This was not the case but a fine display of controlled aggressive batting to the highest standard. Linacre was on 116 when A Wright hit the winning runs in the 37th over. A monstrous display from Linacre with good support from Steers and the whole team

194 for 4.
