Clowne Town Bowl Out Battling Belper!
8th May 2004
At Clowne

After yet another very wet week the ground was sodden. Thanks to the work of Smalley and Holmes it was possible to play the game on the artificial surface. However even though the batsman friendly surface was to be used, run scoring would be difficult. Clowne lost the toss and were put in by the Belper wicket keeper, Spencer the Team captain does not take the toss ”I always lose so I let him do it” fair play and effective.

Clowne got away to a decent start with Smalley and Holmes scoring slowly on the very slow wicket. After a dull opening to the game Belper skipper, Spencer brought himself into the attack and had Holmes caught and bowled for 9. This then brought Hendley (2) and then Spencer to the crease (0) who is now sitting on a hatrick of ducks. At the other end Smalley continued to score vital runs. He and White (13) looked comfortable however Spencer had Smalley LBW for a well made 28. White was then run out for 13. Steve Bennett was the only other major batsman to score double figures scoring a quick 14, again bowled by Spencer. Womble fell for 0 well caught be Spencer. Fellows went for 3 and Pollard finished with 1 with Swannack 7 not out. Pick of the bowlers was the accurate Spencer taking 5-14.

Clowne Town 95 all out.

After another monster tea, prepared by Anne and Kerry, Clowne took the field looking to take something out of the game after a poor batting display. On the drying artificial wicket this would not be easy. However the opening bowlers of Fellows and Swannack went about their task, and Swannack had Bradder LBW for 3 in his 3rd over. Fellows had to be removed from the attack in the 10th over due to a slight side strain after bowling 5 overs for 4 runs. A blow however Pollard was introduced into the attack and continued where Fellows left off. In the 24th over Belper were 38 for 1 and looking to take the game away from Clowne. Pollard was complaining about his run up, therefore he was removed from the attack leaving Bennett with the chance to do his thing. Which is exactly what he did. Having the defensive Burnham bowled for 11 in his 2nd over. A stunning catch from Swannack then accounted for Elmore. Pollard then on at the other end took the wickets of Deeming and Spencer. From a position of control Belper had fell to 49 for 7. Clowne had a chance to finish the game off and Bennett and Pollard finished off the Belper tail finishing with figures of 23 – 5 and 12 – 4 respectivly. All in all a much friendly game than the previous weeks game, all credit to all those who played.
