At Clowne
After the disappointment of missing out against Codnor on Saturday the Clowne boys were looking forward to a game against South Wingfield. Having lost the toss Clowne were put into bat on a damp but firm wicket. Smalley and Holmes opened the inning and looked to push the ball around on the slow wicket. Smalley was run out for 14 this brought Hendley to the crease he and Holmes then moved the score on to 50 before Holmes chipped one up to mid wicket. Spencer then came and went for 0 stumped by Marshall. Wickets then fell at regular intervals however some good running and some fine shots brought Clowne up to a competitive total of 123 all out. Josh Womble (16) and Adam White (17) doing most of the work. Pick of the bowling was R Hardwick 3-26 who bowled well on the slow Clowne wicket.
Clowne Town 123 all out.
After a fine tea from Jackie Clowne were confident of a result and Swannack and Fellows opened the bowling and restricted the opening pair of J Hardwick and Marshall to few scoring shots. The pressure built and resulted in Hardwick being run out. Marshall was next to go bowled by the in form fellows who finished with good figures of 12 overs 5 maidens 25-1, his longest ever spell. Neil pollard was then introduced into the attack and carried on from where he left off the previous week having both Mundell and Smithurst bowled. This brought Spray to the crease and he and Gibbs looked to take the game away from Clowne. Both offered a few half chances however Clowne could not manage the break through until Bennett had Spray bowled for 24. South Wingfield now needed 30 runs with 4 wickets remaining. Swannack then bowled Gibbs and Briggs in consecutive balls. Leaving Clowne with only 2 wickets to get. R Hardwick had decieded to hit out the other end and hit Steve Bennett for 16 in one over. Things were getting tense in Steves next over a massive appeal for LBW went up to a slow full toss which the batsman at first tried to duck, the ball dipped and hit him in front of middle stump all the team were up and all the people watching. We watched on as the South Wingfield opening bat turned down the decision, maybe knowing the last man in would not last long. After a few choice words between a number of the players the game continued. However the hard hitting Hardwick finished the game off quickly. Man of the match Hardwick then offered his apologies to the Clowne lads for the shocking LBW decision. Maybe his huge hitting would have been remembered from this game however only that decision will stick in the memory of the Clowne lads.
