Clowne Town V Chapel F
Chapel Win off Last Ball in the Gloom! 31/08/03 At Clowne
The Chapel skipper Keith Hallam won the toss and elected to put the Clowne team, which included 2 guest players Carl Curran and Michael Alexander, in to bat. Chris Hendley and Curran opened the innings and got off to a decent start scoring at just under 5 an over. However Hendley was soon snapped up in the slips for 13 off the bowling of Hawtin. To the crease came Michael Alexander, and the South African batsmen looked in good form scoring at a rapid rate. He was well supported by Curran until he miss hit one and was caught at mid on for a well made 29. Adam White was the next man in and he looked to give the inform Alexander as much as the strike as possible. It was not long before Alexander brought up his 50; after doing so he looked to increase the scoring rate further and was out bowled for a destructive 63 by the useful Hawtin. In came Matthew Osborne following on from his duck the previous day and he was soon on the way back to the hut for exactly the same total after being cleaned up by Spencer. Next in was skipper Ben Holmes and he and White looked to increase the scoring, something which they achieved through some good running between the wickets. However Holmes departed after giving some soft catching practice to Nic Lee at mid wicket off the bowling of Chapel Skipper Hallam. Graham ‘The Cat’ White then came to the crease on his 29th wedding anniversary, and was sat on a golden pair for the weekend. And the Cat did not disappoint the crowd by pulling all the stops out of the bag and got out first ball again caught by Nic Lee off the bowling of Hallam. Now at the crease was Steers (22), still bragging about his 47 not out which he scored in the morning, and he and Mark Barton (11) put on 30 runs in the last 4 overs to take Clowne to a respectable total of 194-7. Pick of the Chapel bowlers were Hartin (8/2/27/2) and Hallam (5/0/28/2).
Clowne 194-7.
Tea was to be taken after the game so after a quick drink it was straight back to the cricket. Bradbury Junior and Senior opened the innings for Chapel and they got off to a good start. They were helped by some wayward bowling by the tired looking Dale ‘lurch’ Steers, at the other end Matthew Osborne was reeling away but could not get a breakthrough. Bradbury junior looked in good form and was soon hitting the ball around and outside the ground, he even managed to upset some of the locals after hitting one over the fence. He brought up his fifty in about the 14th over. However Josh Womble had Bradbury Senior bowled and this brought Milner to the crease he also looked in good touch and tried to give Bradbury junior most of the strike. With the game running away from Clowne, Chapel were 132-1 off 22 overs Steers was introduced back into the attack and made a sudden impact he had Bradbury caught at the flying Aubrey at Gully and then had Ratcliffe the next ball bowled leaving Chapel 3 down. Chapel Skipper and Nic Lee were now at the crease and were not looking to waste any time. However an inspired bowling Change brought Adam White into the attack and after bowling his first over for a maiden he then took the wicket of the Chapel skipper for 4. This brought Hawtin to the crease and he and Lee put on some much needed runs for Chapel Lee took a particular liking to Steers and hit him for a big 6 and a 4 in consecutive balls. A wicket was required and it was that man again Adam White who came to the fore. He forced lee in to the drive and the ball headed skywards Holmes called for the ball expecting the ball to drop however it just kept going so he had to take of backwards and managed to take the ball behind his head. Now I am not lying it was a decent catch, for me anyway. Lee departed for a quick fire 17. This brought Spencer to the crease with 28 runs required from 7 overs. He and Hawtin both played some good shots and rotated the strike. Matthew Osborne was brought back in to the Clowne attack as the light started to fade. His first over back was good and went for a maiden and the pressure was starting to build on the Chapel batsmen, due to some great fielding by the Clowne lads especially the senior pro Graham White. However the Chapel Batsmen continued to play their shots in the gloom. They had progressed on to 188 when Osborne had Hawtin trapped LBW for a valuble 18. Chapel now needed 7 runs from 2 overs. Adams last over went for 1 one leaving him with figures of 8/1/22/3. So it was therefore left for Osborne to bowl out the last over with Chapel needing 6 for victory. The first ball was a single leaving the new batsmen on strike. Next ball Candlin looking to take the attack for Clowne was caught at extra cover for 0. New man Etchells was in and survived a loud appeal for a stumping however it was still a dot ball so 5 needed from 3. The next ball went for a single. This was followed up by a dot ball. The field was dropped back with Chapel needing 4 for the win. Osborne bowled and Spencer hit towards the leg side to the left of Chris Hendley the batsmen set off running they had run 2 and set off for the 3rd as Hendley released the ball however a fumble led to the pair attempting the winning run which they somehow managed giving Chapel the win, they finished on 195-8 to end a thrilling game.
Chapel 195-8
