Clowne Town CC Clowne Town Unlucky Against Teversal!
By Jamie Fellows - August 27 2003
A maiden 50 for Matthew Linacre could not prevent Clowne Town Sliping to defeat against Teversal. However a much improved bowling and fielding display from all the boys gives hope for the remainder of the season as the team look to turn around the run of defeats. >

Clowne Town Unlucky Against Teversal!
24/08/03
At Clowne

Still searching for their first win under new skipper Jamie Fellows, Clowne entertained a Teversal side who were having a very indifferent season. On a track that was good for batting, Clowne won the toss and elected to bat first.

Clowne opened the batting with Matt Osborne and Dale Steers. Osborne was looking very settled and Steers looking nervous. Osborne was playing some lovely looking shots and just as it was murmured that he could get a big score today, he was bowled by Dean Nuttall (10-3-25-3) for 4. Phill Bennett came in at number three and soon went the same way as Osborne as he was also bowled by Nuttall for 4, again as someone said he was going well!!!! Then steers came into his own. The nerves and butterflies looked to have left him and he started playing his usual innings, with some extravagant strokes. Then, just as it looked like Clowne could get a big total, Steers was caught by J. Gell off the bowling of Nuttall for 21. Paul Osborne and Matt Linacre occupied the crease and both put on a nice partnership of 64 before Paul was bowled by Dave Jarvis (9-3-22-5) for 27 with the score on 117-4 from 32 overs. Askew joined Linacre at the crease and his stay was short and sweet as he was bowled by Jarvis for 3.

This is where the mini collapse began. Jamie Fellows went in at number 7 and was bowled by Jarvis for a golden duck. Houghton then came in and also got a golden duck, stumped off the bowling of Phil Steele (6.5-0-36-2). Greveson then fell LBW off the bowling of Jarvis for 2 and Mallen followed straight after, bowled by Jarvis. Clowne had collapsed from 117-4 to 131-9. However, there was one very good thing to come out of the performance and that was the innings of Matt Linacre. He was out of form coming into the game and he played one the best innings I have seen this season. He was playing some wonderful shots and he passed 50 for the first time in his senior career and was duly applauded by everyone in the ground, including some of his sister’s mates who had come up to watch the game. Not a bad way to impress them matt!!!!!!!! Adam Wright came in at number 11 and he tried to score sum runs but was caught at first slip off the bowling of Steele for 0. Matt finished on 55*.

After a rousing team talk, Clowne came back onto the field all fired up ready to defend their total. Mallen and Steers opened the bowling for Clowne and it was from the bowling of the out of form Mallen that Clowne took their first wicket. Lambert hit a shot into the mid wicket area where the cat like skipper was fielding. He dived down to stop the ball and whilst on the floor, threw the ball in over the stumps and ran out Dave Jarvis for 8. However that was the only breakthrough Clowne got from the first 10 overs. However, I’m sure Hayley thought something was broken as he took one for the team. Lambert creamed a drive just to the left of Hayley who was fielding at mid off. He dived down to stop the ball and unfortunately it jumped on him a bit and hit him square in the sensitive area. After a quick rub from Par Osborne, he was ok to continue.

A double bowling change saw Fellows (8.5-3-38-1) and Wright (5-1-20-1) introduced into the attack. Fellows was bowling his usual tight line and length but couldn’t get the breakthrough. Wright however was beating the batsmen for a lack of pace and clean-bowled R. Parsons for 3. At drinks Clowne had Teversal 85-3.

Dale Steers was introduced back into the attack straight after drinks and immediately picked up a wicket, having Lambert caught behind by Houghton for 23. Next over he struck again, removing Oglesby C+B for 37. With Greveson (8-2-19-0) bowling tightly at the other end the two bowlers complimented each other perfectly. Steers struck again in the final over of his spell clean bowling S. Walker for 11. Steers looked to have bowled Clowne back into the game and, as he finished his spell, Teversal were 113-5 with 10 overs left. Matt Linacre (5-4-4-2), fresh from his maiden senior 50 was fired up and was introduced into the attack.

It really was gamble time now the Clowne skipper and he brought himself back on in place of Greveson. Linacre was bowling really well and got what he deserved when he had Dean Nuttall caught at point by Mallen for 1. He then removed the dangerous Teversal skipper, Andy Houghton, clean bowing him for 13. Teversal needed 7 from the last two overs and Fellows got smacked straight back over his head for 6 and that more or less meant game over. However, the next ball Fellows bowled the guy who had just hit the six, John Gell, for 20. Steele came in and just swung the bat at the ball. He managed to top edge the winning run over the keepers head and Teversal won by two wickets with an over to spare.

Riddings 138 - 8.

A good performance in the field was let down by a generally poor batting display. A very good game, well done to all who took part.

Riddings b Clowne Town by 8 wicketseat.

Points
