Clowne Town V Shipley Hall
Clowne Town Grind it out Against Superb Shipley! 16/08/03 At Clowne
For the first time in about 6 games Clowne won the toss and elected to put Shipley into bat. Linacre and Steers opened the bowling and made a good start having D. Cockane caught at point for 14 off the bowling of Linacre. However in the over Steers lured Mcdonough into a lofted cover drive and he was put down by Thompson for 2 how expensive would this mistake prove to be. 2 balls after this droped chance Steers had Brandrick bowled for 0. This brought the inform Rimmington to the crease and he helped put on 40 for the 3rd wicket before chasing a wide one from Ashley and was caught behind for 23. Josh Womble (making his 1st team debut) was then brought into the attack and soon settled into bowling a good line and length. He then had the Shipley skipper Abbott caught at mid on for 10. At the other end Mcdonough continued to punish anything loose from the Clowne attack and had moved on to his 50 A big fine was mounting up for Thompson. Next to go was Shaw who made 5. Next in was Kirk and he and Mcdonough added 64 and Mcdonough brought up his well made ton, however we was out soon after for 103 being bowled by Linacre but the damage was already done. Kirk (36) and Turner(12) then added a quick fire 30 off the last 4 overs to leave Shipley on 213-6. The pick of the Clowne bowlers was Linacre (14/3/67/2) However all bowlers contributed and stuck to the task in hand. It is also worthwhile mentioning a special appearance of Phil Bennett the waiter who brought out the drinks dressed in his suit for Ians wedding, and for Swanny who had started on the booze already!!
Shipley Hall 213-6
After a massive tea which included 4 pizzas, 2 trifles and numerous other cakes and snacks Clowne opened the innings with Holmes and Osborne knowing that their batting order was weaker than normal, therefore it was necessary to bat with caution. However Osborne after playing some good looking shots lost his head and was caught at Gully off the bowling of North, who has to be the biggest 14 year old I have ever seen. White then went after 4 balls for 0 as the fears of a batting collapse resurfaced. However the very defensive Holmes and Smalley batted with determination. Until Holmes hit a high full toss straight to square leg and was out for 28. However Smalley took responsibility and made a very patient 45 not out. He was well supported by Gary Hibbard (21) (who was making his first appearance for over 2 years), Thompson (4) and Doughty (5). Dale Steers also made 1 not out. To take Clowne to 151-6.
Clowne Town 151-6
All in all a decent result against far and away the best side in the division. And best of luck to all the Shipley boys next year as they go into 3N.
After the game most of the boys made an appearance at Ians reception and it was good to see that Swanny was at his drunken best, necking the Gin and the Stout Russians as if they were going out of fassion, a bit like Phil B's hairstyle. Aubrey also gave an excellant rendition of Shot Through The Heart. It was then left to Aubrey, Fingers and myself to get the very drunk and very funny Swanny home. This included getting over the Iron Bridge which was quite an experiance, however we somehow managed it.
