Clowne Town Survive Against Shireoaks!
03/08/03
At Shireoaks

On a scorching hot day Clowne arrived at one of the best looking grounds in the league. The pitch looked a little bit green and this was enough to sway captain Fellows’s decision to bowl first.

Opening the bowling for Clowne was the experienced Steve Bennett and Luke Mallen. Steve bowled his usual tidy line and length and looked to have Bakes trapped on his crease only for the LBW appeal to be turned down by Bakes’s fellow player???? At the other end though was a different story with Mallen (5-0-37-0) bowling very erratically and being flailed to all parts of the ground. This prompted a change and J.Kinsey (7-0-43-0) was brought into the attack along with J.Fellows. Kinsey again bowled with good control and was unlucky to remain wicketless with the Shireoaks batsmen playing some very unorthodox shots. He also had Fox dropped by White in the deep. Fellows bowled 3 overs then took himself off???? This brought White and Greaveson into the attack to try and break a partnership which was over 150!! The Shireoaks batsmen were now looking for a huge total and swiping at everything this made Greavesons figures look a lot worse than he deserved 7-0-43-0. White also went around the park (5-0-39-0). Bennet was brought back into the attack and finally broke the partnership clean bowling Fox for 98 this was just after bakes had reached his century. Fellows finally brought himself back and had Allen well caught by wicket keeper Ryan Bennett. This was the last wicket to fall and bakes finished 112 not out and Brealey 7 not out. Bennett’s figures were 10-2-41-1 and Fellows 6-0-27-1. Shireoaks finished on a mammoth 242 for 2.

Shireoaks 242-2
A Big Chase!

Clowne opened the batting with Matthew Osborne and Steve Bennett both got Clowne off to a flying start and well up with the run rate. Clowne were 40-0 after five overs, however very next over Osborne got a leading edge trying to work one off his pads and was caught and bowled for 24. Ryan Bennett came in 3 and collected another 3rd team duck but Cousin Steve (35) was belting the ball around the park until he was well caught by Blackham at Mid-On, leaving the score 68-3 after 10 overs. This brought Barton and White to the crease and White was soon heading back for 3 after being yorked by P.Dewberry. Greaveson soon followed for 0 and it was time to consolidate and that’s exactly what Barton and Parker did. They batted for 10 overs together before Parker was dismissed by a sharp catch at silly point for a well made 12. Kinsey then followed 2 balls later for 0. Adam Wright was next man in and Barton was next man out stumped by fox for a well made 28. This left Wright 8 not out and the big hitting Fellows 24 not out to see out the innings 167-8 and earn Clowne a losing draw. Pick of the Shireoaks bowlers was Brealey (7-3-10-3), Healy (10-3-18-2) and P.Dewberry (7-2-13-1).
