Clowne Town Made to Sweat by Marehay!
02/08/03
At Clowne

Clowne lost the toss for the 4th match in a row and were put into bat on a good looking pitch at Clowne. However it was tought that the pitch would be a bit slower than normal due to the amount of rain which had fallen in the week. However Ben Holmes and Adam White made their way to the crease in confident mood. As expected the pitch was a little on the slow side and the Marehay bowlers bowled a good line and length to restrict the scoring chances. M. Kirk bowled a good opening spell (6/3/15/0) before being removed from the attack. By this time Clowne had moved on to 38. J. Kyte was then brought in to the attack his first 2 overs went for 5 runs however his next over went for 16 with White hitting him for 4 consecutive fours, this would have a huge influence on the outcome of the game. Shortly afterwards White was out LBW to one which kept low for 31. This brought Long to the crease and he and Holmes added a further 25 runs before Long was bowled for 14. Smalley went LBW the very next ball and it was not long before Osborne was bowled for 0.

Another Batting Collapse!!

However Paul Thompson then made his way to the crease to join Holmes, the pair added 53 with some good running between the wickets and some fine shots including 2 massive 6's from Thompson. During this time Holmes brought up his 50 but was soon out bowled for 61. Mark Osborne then came and went without troubling the scorers before Ryan Bennett (7) and Joseph Kinsey (2*) helped support Thompson as he made 38 not out, leaving Clowne 169 -7.

Clowne Town 169-7

Again the Clowne Bowlers knew that they had to bowl a good line and length in order to put the Marehay batsmen under pressure early in their innings. Glyn Long and Aubrey Ashley opened the bowling due to the non-availability of Dale Steers, Dave Swannack and Paul Linacre. However both bowled a good opening spell and after 20 overs Marehay were 53-0. A good start but Clowne needed a few wickets. So Holmes turned to Neil Pollard to do the job. The gamble paid off as Pollard removed Tinsley for 17 in only his second over. This brought M. Walters to the crease, who looked in good touch from the start. Pollard then removed Marehay skipper Wilby for 32 with the help of a great catch at gully by Long. Pollard then had his 3rd wicket P. Walters bowled for 9, leaving him with figures of (10/4/28/3) in a great spell. And He will be missed for the next 3 weeks as he is on holiday in Canada. In the meantime Joseph Kinsey had been bowling very well from the other end and finished with figures of (9/0/33/0) in a much improved effort from recent weeks. With the run rate starting to increase, Marehay required 34 from the last 4 overs, the Marehay batsmen started to take risks and M. Kirk was run out for 3. M. Walters continued to play his shots and was scoring at the required rate off of the bowling of Long and Ashley however he pulled his hamstring and required a runner, in came skipper Wilby to do the job (by far the fastest runner in the Marehay team). However in a cruel and very funny twist(from a Clowne point of view anyway) Walters was run out due to the other batsmen hitting a cracking straight drive down the ground which Ashley deflected on the stumps leaving runner Wiliby miles out of his ground. Leaving Walters gutted having made 45. This probably cost Marehay a certain victory. However the action did not stop Marehay required 15 off the last over to win, Ashley was the bowler. Ford the facing batsmen scored 2 off the first ball followed by a huge six over deep mid wicket, which did a little bit of damage to one of the locals houses, leaving 7 required off 4 balls. He went to repeat the dose off the next ball but swung and missed to the relief of the Clowne fielders. Ashley then bowled the perfect yorker and had ford bowled. The next 2 balls went for 2 runs and Clowne scraped home with 4 runs to spare to claim the winning draw in an entertaining game.
