Clowne Town Get Winning Draw At Butterley!
26/07/03
At Butterley

Clowne arrived at Butterley after heavy rain on the friday and found a decent looking wicket. However after losing the toss they were put into bat. Stuart and Andy Bonsall opened the bowling for Butterley and bowled with good control and accuracy in helpful conditions. The first wicket fell in the 13th over, Holmes went for 17 caught at cover with the score on 30. This brought Long to the crease and he added 8 before top edging one to mid wicket for 8. Smalley was then caught out by the slow wicket after only making 5. Adam White was next to depart in Andy Bonsals last over (3-28) after doing all the hard work, he made a valuble 19.

Day of the Bong

Now at the crease were Paul Thompson and Matthew 'Bong' Osborne. After a nervouse start Bong quickly got his game together smashing the Butterley change bowlers around the ground. He was well supported by Thompson (17) and Mark Osborne (5) however the innings Bong played was real class in the triky conditions and given the game situation. He reached his 50 with a classic back foot drive through the covers bringing up his first 50 for the club, hopefully the first of many. Dave 'the Drunk' Swannack then added a telling 16 which included a massive 6 on to the road in the last 2 overs before being caught out of the last ball of the innings leaving Clowne on 166-7. A decent total on a slow pitch.

Clowne Town 166-7

Clowne went out to bowl knowing that they had to bowle a decent line and length on this wicket, in order to keep the Butterley batsman (known for their big hitting) at bay. Swannack opened the bowling and was at his stingey best. From the other end was Ashley and after a bad first over he was soon back to his best and Claimed the wicket of the big hitting Andy Bonsal for 18. Next to fall was Dance who was well caught by Pollard off Swannack for 13. Pollard then came on for Ashley and made a perfect start claiming 2 wickets in his first over, Pash (5) and Woodward (0) fell in consecutive balls. Long then replaced Swannack and he had Johnson caught by that man again Pollard in his 4th over. This then brought 'Slam' Beardsley to the crease along with Patterson both tried to take the game away from Clowne. However Long had Beardsley caught ot long off by Holmes for 25. Stuart Bonsall then fell to the exact same shot for 9. Leaving Butterley 8 down with 6 overs to spare needing about 30 to win. It was also very dark and the rain was falling however both sides wanted a win and stopped out in the terrible weather. Patterson continued to attack the Clowne Bowling. However Long continued his great spell of bowling (14/2/52/4) and got wicket number 4 having Jones caught by Kinsey in his last over. Butterley now required 13 off the last over with 1 wicket remaining, Pollard had the responsibility of bowling it. The first ball went for 4 leaving 9 to win however the next 5 balls were dot balls and both sides settled for a hard fought draw.

Butterley United 158-9

Well done to Bong for his fine maiden 50
