Clowne Town Get Winning Draw At Belper!
05/07/03
At Belper

Clowne arrived at Belper after the long journey from Clowne and found the ground in good condition, which was a surprise after all the rain in the week. The wicket was slightly damp but looked good. However it was no surprise that Clowne were put into bat having lost the toss.

For the third 1st team game on the trot Clowne opened the innings with Holmes and White. The Clowne innings got under way with 8 runs coming off the first over however the bowlers were soon making full use of the conditions. Griffiths bowled fast and straight and got the ball to dart about and had White caught and bowled for 10. This brought Long to the crease and he and Holmes added 60 for the 2nd wicket, until Holmes was caught at gully for 36 off Deeming. Clkowne then suffered a now regular middle order collapse with Spencer (2), Smalley (5) and Linacre (0) all giving their wickets away.

Mix up!

Both Linacre and Smalley were run out in comical fashion in both instances it was a case of Yes, No, Yes, No O go on then, followed by a few choice words. These run outs probably cost Clowne the chance to post a total in excess of 200. However Thompson came to the crease and added a useful 18, Long had continued his good form however he was caught in the deep off Spencer for 44. The rest of the Clowne tail were quickly removed by Spencer leaving Clowne on 146 all out from 46 overs with Kinsey being bowled with the last ball of the innings. Pick of the Belper bowlers were Spencer (4-50) and Deeming (3-22).

Clowne 146 all out

With a modest total it was important that the Clowne attack bowled a tight line early on and take early wickets. Opening the bowling was the now fit again Dave Swannack and the in form Paul Linacre. It was not long before this pair made the breakthrough with Swannack having Burnham caught behind for 1. However after this initial breakthrough the Clowne attack could not take any more wickets however very few runs were being scored after 15 overs the Belper total was only 14. Kinsey (3-30) was then brought into the attack and was rewarded instantley having both Briant and Harris caught in the deep off his first over. He then took the wicket of Deeming (8) in his 3rd over again caught in the deep by safe hand Chalky. Pollard (2-25) then had Bradder (6) bowled and Elmore (0) LBW as Clowne pushed for the win. Howver Belper captain and R Deeming had other ideas and quickly pushed the score up to 90 with 12 overs left, however Linacre was brought back into the attack and had Deeming LBW for a rapid 21. With little batting left Spencer looked to farm the bowling but he could not prevent Driffiths (0) and Spendlove (1) falling leaving Belper 9 down with 3 overs to bat. Despite every effort Swannack (2-19) and Linacre (2-13) could not remove the last wicket leaving Clowne with only 15 points insted of the full 27 if they had bowled the Belper team out.

Belper 104-9

However this was a great performance from the boys and they will look to take this form into the remainder of the season.
