Clowne Town Well Beaten by Denby!
21/06/03
At Denby

Clowne were put in to bat by Denby on a very warm afternoon, new opening partnership Andy Smalley and Phil Bennett started brightly before Smalley fell to a very questionable LBW to Foulke for 7. Adam White and Bennett then took the score past fifty White was looking fluent but still found the fielders with most off his aggresive shots and he finally fell with the score on 54 for a well made 14. Len Wright came in and knocked the ball around nicely for 15 before being caught trying to flick one off his legs in an identical dismissal to White's. Then Mark Osborne and Graham White quickly followed back to the pavillion as Clowne subsided to 105 for 5. Phil Bennett's barnacle like resistance was then ended by Foulke caught and bowled for 48 as a promising position slipped away. However Matt Linacre and Paul Osborne briefly threatened to reserect the innings with 16 and 17 respectively but Clowne finally subsided to a disapointing 135 all out in their 46 overs. Pick of the bowlers were Foulke (12-2-24-3) and Cherry (11-0-35-3).

Clowne 135 All Out

In reply to this paltry total Denby were scarcely in trouble despite some decent bowling from the Clowne attack. Pollard (12-3-35-0) and Ashley (10-2-28-0) were frugal without being threatening in their opening spells and captain Phil Bennett made a double change with Matt Linacre and Dave Keys( 8-1-32-2) briefly threatening to turn the game round. Linacre picked up both openers Cox and Cook for 29 and 28 respectively and Keys removed Wood and Payne but it was never going to be enough as first Cherry and Foulke who later retired hurt and then Cherry and Sherwood took the game away from Clowne. Despite a decent second spell from Pollard we came up short.Cherry ended with an excellent knock of 46 not out. Pick of the bowlers was young Matt Linacre who deserved better than his return of 7.1-0-25-2. A very disapointing result considering recent form but not entirely unexpected with all the changes to the side however as the new look team beds down hopefully things will improve.
