Clowne Town V Mansfield
Clowne Denied By the Weather Against Mansfield! 08/06/03 At Clowne
After last weeks under strength side were beaten by a very strong Blyth side Clowne were looking to get back to winning ways against Mansfield & Pleasley and were fully confident after we achieved the double over them last year.
Adam White lost the toss for the first time this year and Clowne were put into bat in overcast conditions. Clowne opened the batting with Dale Steers and Mark Barton. But were soon in trouble in the first over when one leaped up at Steers (0) and he tamely lobbed the ball back to the bowler Alwood. This brought Nigel Spencer to the crease.

HEAVENS OPENED!!
After a good start by Mansfield they would have been disappointed to see that the rain started to come down and play was halted after 6 overs. The rain came down heavier than we had seen all year and the square soon had scattered puddles on it. After a long wait the rain finally halted and we quickly tried to get the ground back into a playable state. The covers did their job and the quick draining of the outfield made it possible for a 4.10pm restart.
Clowne resumed on 17 for 1 but the quick scoring Spencer soon raised the run rate. Barton was doing a great job at the other end giving Nigel the strike and keeping the Mansfield bowling at bay. Barton eventually fell in the 19th over for a well grafted 8 being bowled by Hales with the score on 64 for 1. White then came to the middle and rotated the strike well with Spencer who had now reached his 50 and looking for a big score. Spencer was next to go for a very good 76 being caught in the covers. White (14) was soon to follow after being judged to be caught behind down the leg side but was actually hit on the forearm. Ryan Bennett (0) then followed in the same over being caught and bowled. Then Ashley (1) and Askew (1) all were back in the hut. This left Clowne on 131 for 7 after being 99 for 2 only 6 overs previous. This left Matt Linacre and Jamie Fellows at the crease. These two rotated the strike well and kept the score ticking then with both batsmen on 17 in the 39th over Linacre let loose he left the first ball but then went barmy hitting 4,4,4,6,6 off the rest of the over. Clowne ended up with a very good 190 for 7 with Linacre 41* and Fellows 22*. Wilkinson finishing with the best figures of 3-0-14-3 for Mansfield.
Clowne 190-7 Steers Like Lightning
Clowne looked for quick wickets when the Mansfield reply got under way after the earlier rain had turned the game into a time game. Openers Steers and Luke Mallen soon got to business. With Steers bowling the quickest I have seen this year he soon had Harrison (0) caught behind from Askew in the 3rd over. With Dales pace he looked like getting a wicket every ball and nearly knocking them out, hitting Davis with a nasty blow on his elbow. Steers then picked up his second wicket in the 7th over clean bowling the very frightend Davis for 4. Mallen (5-2-7-0) bowled a very good line and length and was unlucky to finish wicketless. This brought Calvin Cook into the attack and the little swing bowler soon found his line and length and picked up the wicket of Smith clean bowling him for 1. Calvin finished with the very good figures of 5-2-11-1. Steers (9-5-9-3) was then brought back into the attack to try and get quick wickets and earn us a few extra points. He picked up the valuable wicket of Wilkinson (36) having him well caught by Cook at square leg. The only other wicket to fall after this was Evans (4) caught by Mallen off the bowling of White (1.5-0-9-1). The Mansfield innings closed on 65 for 5 after 28 overs. Other Clowne bowlers were Fellows (.1-0-2-0), Linacre (3-0-7-0) and Spencer (5-1-13-0). I have no doubts that Clowne would have picked up the maximum points had the weather not halted our proceedings. It has seen Clowne rise to 3rd in the table and promotion looks to be our main objective again this season.
