Clowne Town V Roundhouse Taverners 11/05/03
Clowne Round off the Tavs. 11/05/03 At Clowne
“What a lovely day for a game of cricket” I thought as I woke up on a bright and warm Sunday morning. How wrong would I be? The heavens opened just as the players started arriving at the ground and it was going to be one of those off and on days.
However, play started on time with Clowne winning the toss and electing to field first. Osborne (4-0-13-1) and Fellows (4-0-12-0) opened the bowling for Clowne with Osborne taking the first and only wicket of the innings in the third over, trapping the Taverners opener LBW for 4.
The score was restricted to just 26 from 8 overs when a double bowling change saw Darren Grevesen and Josh ‘Anil’ Womble bought into the attack. Darren bowled his usual, tight line and went un-rewarded for a good spell of bowling. Josh found his line and length quickly and was causing the two batsmen a lot of trouble before rain stopped play in the 16th over.
After a short break and a lot of fun putting the covers on and taking them off, play was resumed with Womble and Grevesen continuing. However, a stiff back caused an end to Wombles spell. The clubs, and I quote “number 1 off spinner”, Fat Angus(7-0-29-0) was introduced into the attack along with sloth machine from the opposite end. Both bowled really well and sloth was generating a lot of pace before the heavens opened again and it was decided the Roundhouse Taverners would declare on 89-1 from 31 overs.
Could we knock em off?
After stocking up on an absolutely wonderful spread laid on by Jackie and Graham, Clownes innings was reduced to a 20 over slog due to the weather. Needing 90, the Osborne brothers were sent out to open the batting and had the licence to ‘have a do’. With the score on 15, Bong succumbed to a straight delivery that bowled him as he tried to club it into cow corner. And Mark Oz was bowled off his legs with the score on 29.
This saw Angus and Sloth at the crease. Angus tried his very best to move the sore along but he couldn’t add anything to the total before he was caught trying to cut a ball that wasn’t there to be cut. Phill was then summoned to the crease. Clowne needed 6 from the last over. Sloth creamed a four first ball and then a single second ball. Phill, with two balls remaining hit the winning runs, edging a ball through the slips for a single which wrapped the innings up. Both were absolutely superb with Sloth getting a career best 48 not out.
A good performance in brass-monkey weather. It was a very good game and both sides contested it well. Well done to the Clowne boys, it was a pleasure to captain you all.
