Secretary’s Report 2002

The club continues to go from strength to strength especially in the junior section although we did not enter a team at under 12s this year we did have two teams at under 11s and one each at 13s and 15s. The under 11s A team maintained a 100% record through the year and easily won the league. Both the under 13s and the under 15s had a reasonably successful year finishing well up their respective tables.

I would like to thank all those involved in running these teams, I would also make a plea for some of the senior players, especially those who have a coaching qualification, to assist in the training and running of these teams so that the momentum can be continued.

At senior level the first team started and ended the season well but could not sustain this effort through the middle section, the second team started poorly taking time to adjust to the level of play in the higher division however they came good in the middle of the season only to drop off again at the end. Both teams struggled to maintain a settled side and this obviously had some bearing on the results. It was however encouraging to see some of the younger players starting to pressure the established players for both first and second team places.

The third team’s first season in the Edwin Arthur League was very successful especially when considering the age and experience of most of the players. Adam White and Jamie Fellows won the divisions under 21 averages for batting and bowling and the team had the most bowling points in the division. The team spirit was excellent and the players practised regularly, which is something the senior teams could improve upon.

The clubs off field activities included the now annual six-aside competition, the race night and the bonfire and fireworks display; all of these events were a great success and thanks to all whom helped. The Clowne Fun Run was held in November this year and the club organised the catering arrangements.

On the down side the winter use of the club bar was considerably lower than in previous years and has virtually none existent since the seasons close.

The ground is being re-assessed and will hopefully now that we have the now scoreboard will be grade A next season. The club also successfully hosted an inter county under 13s match between Derbyshire and Notts and will hopefully host another game next year.

Thanks mostly to John Steers efforts our wickets were some of the best in our divisions however next year more help is required from the senior players if this is to continue. We also need to consider improving our covers and we are presently looking at the costs involved in different solutions to this problem.

The club is working towards gaining "Club Mark" which is an accreditation that the club organised and meets certain standards in its management and child protection etc. Clubs who do not have this accreditation may find it more difficult to attract funding in the future.

Cricket at a grassroots level is being restructured, at senior level the pyramid system starts next season and at junior level the county is introducing representative cricket at district level as a first step towards county selection.

Finally, I have found the first year in the role of secretary interesting but more stressful than I expected. I’m sure I have attended more meetings than the Prime Minister.
