HYTHE & DIBDEN COLTS CRICKET
UNDER 17's Vs BRANSGORE
6th July
A 81 run opening partnership betwee Russell Moore 32 and Tom Porter 40 couldn't prevent Hythe going down by 39 runs this evening.
Lack of concentration in the field and poor fielding by some of the more experienced players resulted in Hythe chasing 20 more runs than they should have against a strong Bransgore side which included one lad that hit Whits for six in a County 2 game last weekend.
Toss Won by : Bransgore
Bransgore won the toss and elected to bat first on a damp wicket. A further shower delayed the start by 10 minutes which was nothing considering Bransgore had driven through thunderstorms and heavy rain to get to the ground.
Russell Moore opened the bowling with the inform Pete Stevens and Richard Last. Between them they bowled a steady opening spell with 35 coming off the first 7 overs. Stevens finished his spell with 0-14 off 4 which was a good effort considering the short boundary and his bowling kept the Bransgore openers tied down.
Last had some bad luck when Smith mis timed a catch at mid on. Moore himself replaced Last from the bottom end and went for 8 in his first over.
Then the breakthrough. Tom Porter bowling downhill had J.Page very well caught by Lee Powell at mid off.43 for 1
16 runs later and Bransgore lost there second wicket when Moore ran out Kingham for 4. Score 59 for 2 off 11.2 overs.
The Hythe bowlers were bowling well at this stage and managing to keep the score down especially Tom Porter who had figures of 1-6 off 2overs.
Next in was Mudeford 2nd XI player D.Mallins - time to exploit the short boundary. Lee Powell came on at the top end and six balls later he was off after going for 19 in one over. Mallins hit 3 fours and one six in quick time supported by Porter and Smith on the boundary who were more concerned on other things with two legs and a wiggle.
James Carse came on from the bottom end and and after being hit for two boundaries he held onto an excellent caught and bowled to dismiss Maddins for 22. The score was now 113 for 4 off 16.
Wingate then retired after reaching his 53. Carse got his second wicket when he span the ball a mile to dismiss Cox 5. Though his bowling was expensive 2-22 off 2.
Ben Smith bowled the last two overs from the top end and he too was expensive 0-21 off 2 overs not helped by a comdey act on the boundary line between Powell and Porter.
Bransgore finished on 137 for 4 off 18 overs. James Page kept wicket very well and praise for the skipper who tried to keep his team going at all times. Shame a few had other things on their mind.
In reply Hythe got off to a very good start despite the two opening bowlers having senior league experience with Mudeford.
Russell Moore and Tom Porter hit 29 off the first 5 overs, 52 off 10 and 77 off 14. They rode their luck a little with Porter hitting hard into the slips on numerous occasions.
By this time it was getting dark and Bransgore reverted back to their opening bowlers. Then a double breakthrough first Tom Porter was bowled by Mallins for a gritty 40, an innings which included 5 fours. Porter struggled at first because the ball was very slow getting onto the bat but once he got his eye in he played some lovely shots.
Then a mix up between Moore and James Page and Moore was run out for 32 a good solid innings by the skipper. Moores innings included 3 fours and a six.
Hythe were now 82 for 2 off 15 overs and the orders were given to try and get to the 100 mark.
Page was next to go for his standard run out for 10 with the score at 94 for 3 off 17. Wiyth the first ball of the last over Ben Smith was caught behind for 1 and on the last ball of the innings Pete Stevens was run out for 3. Richard Last finished on 2 not out and Hythe made 98 for 5 off 18 overs. A good effort.
