HYTHE SUNDAY SECOND XI VS FAWLEY

Sunday 2nd July - TONY WOODHOUSE TROPHY

Toss : Won by Fawley

If Tony Woodhouse had been up at Fawley this afternoon he would have been really chuffed to see so many colts turn out for the adult side and put in a good performance.

14 year old Ben Smith hit a senior best of 31 and 16 year old Pete Stevens chipped in with 14 another senior best plus a creditable 2-15 off 7 overs.

Unfortunately Fawley got home with 7 balls to spare and congratulations to them as this was the first time they have beaten us in this tournament.

Thanks to Gary Howe for looking after the side who were a credit to the club.

Fawley won the toss and put Hythe in on a good batting track.

Hythe opened with to Under 17 players James Page and Russell Moore who has been in good form of late.

Unfortunately Hythe were soon in trouble with both openers and Steve Miller back in the pavillion with only 20 on the board and at 10 overs Hythe were 23 for 3.

Sean Tongs then joined young Ben Smith in the middle and they looked to be settling in for a good partnership when Tongs was out for 29 with the score on 68 for 4 off 23 overs.

14 year old Smith continued to show good form and shared in a partnership of 29 in 8 overs with 16 year old Pete Stevens before Stevens was caught for 14.

Alan Taylor playing against his old club came in at number 7 and set about increasing the run rate. But with the score on 111 Hythe lost their 6th wicket when Smith 31 was bowled by Rogers. James Carse playing his first ever senior game was caught for 0 and Hythe were struggling at 127 for 8.

Gary Howe joined Taylor and between them they put on 20 for the 8th wicket before Howe was bowled by Shepherd for 16. Taylor was going well and was now joined with 12 year old Harry Smith making his senior debut, but unfortunatley Taylor blotted his copy book and ran young Harry out with the score on 148 with a few balls left in the innings.

Hythe finished the innings on 158 for 9 with Taylor 26* and Pete Smith 0*

Fawley swapped their batting order around with usual opener batting down at 9.

Father and son opened the bowling for Hythe and it was son Harry who came out on top bolwing a fine spell of 4 overs for just 6 runs. Dad also dropped a caught and bowled off his own bowling to make matters worse.

After 8 overs Fawley had 30 on the board and Gary Howe turned to Russell Moore in the hop of a breakthrough. Pete Stevens took over at the other end hoping to continue his form of Thursday evening. Both under 17's were bowling very tightely particularly Stevens whose first four overs went for only 4 runs. Then with the score on 49 Moore got the breakthrough when he bowled Cox for 26. Next over Stevens got another when he had Patra LBW for 15 and Fawley were 53 for 2.

With 20 overs remaining in the game Fawley needed 106 to win.

Hythe immediately broke through again when Smith was well caught by Taylor off Moore for 4 and Fawley were 57 for 3.

Moore finished his spell of 2-15 off 6 and Stevens 1-11 off 6 and two spinners were brought into the attack. James Carse went for 9 off his first over but Ben Smith with his 3rd ball had S.Roger stumped by Gary Howe for 1 and Fawley were 68 for 4.

Just as Hythe were getting back into the game Shepherd and captain for the day McElhenney then took control. 50 runs cam off the next 10 overs and with 7 overs left Fawley required 41 to win.

Shepherd reached his 50 which included 7 fours and with 7 off the next over the target was now 28 off five overs. Stevens and Moore were reintroduced into the attack for the last three overs and Stevens broke the partnership when he had McElhenney 27 well caught by Miller in the deep with 6 runs still required. In the penultimate over Shepherd made sure of victory and finishing himself on 69*.

Fawley collected 19 points and Hythe 4 points
