HYTHE & DIBDEN CRICKET CLUB
UNDER 11's COLTS CRICKET
18th June Vs WELLOW & PLAITFORD
Toss Won by : Wellow
A below par bowling display and a good third wicket partnership for Wellow, resulted in a 19 run defeat for the Under 11's.
Hythe were minus skipper Charlie Craine and Nathan Froggett and just before the start they lost Richard Lever who was feeling ill. Peter Lever replaced and put in an impressive first performance.
Wellow won the toss and elected to field first.
After some influence from Mr.Chalmers the batting order was changed around from previous weeks.
Jason Shorto and Chris Griffin opened the innimngs for Hythe and started steadily with 6 coming off the first two overs. In the third over Wellow made the breakthrough when Chris was bowled. Caution was the key for the rest of the innings and the pair took the score to 212 for 1 off their four overs. Jason finished on 2 and Chris -5.
Hythe's second pair was Connor Mckell and Josh Mead. Connor faced and hit the first ball of his innings for four. Three balls later he was out going for a similar shot. For the next three overs Connor and Josh steadily added to the score without losing another wicket, with some good running between the wicket. The guys innings finished on 228 for 2 with Josh 4 and Connor 1. The pair had put on a partnership of 14.
Richard Jones came in third partnering young Peter Lever. Richard batted very sensibly trying to keep the strike until the last couple of balls in each over. Richard finished on 7 and Peter 1 in an unbeaten stand of 14 for the third pairing. Peter did evrything that was asked of him as he blocked his stumps with confidence.
242 for 2 as the fourth pair came to the crease of Captain Tom Smith and Kieran Chalmers. The pair got off to the worst start as Tom was run out. Good calling and running between the wicket ( though some very risky ) resulted with them taking the score to 255 with one over left but then Tom was out again and Hythe finished on 254 for 4.
Looking at Wellows bowling display, at that stage Hythe were confident of going onto win the game. Unfortunately Wellows batting was much stronger than their bowling.
Kieran and Tom opened up the bowling but four wides in the first two overs set the trend for the rest of the innings. After four overs Wellow were 216 for 0. The second and third pair was where Wellow took control of the game with the Hythe bowlers bowling too many wides or down the leg side to be hit for four.
Wellow were 243 for 0 after 8 and 255 after 12 though Hythe did gain a first wicket with a smart run out from Chris Griffin.
The final pairing just had to bat out to win the game but the Hythe lads never gave up and kept plugging away. Richard Jones was impressive behind the stumps to cap off a good match all round.
Hythe got a second wicket when Peter Lever ran a batsman out supported by some clever glove work by Jones, but Wellow went onto finish on 273 for 2 and win the match by 19 runs.
The game was played in good spirit and watched by a good size crowd.
At the end of the day Wellows batting was too good with four decent batsman. As for Hythe it was our bowling guys where we lost it. 34 runs were lost because of wides and 3 for no balls. Kieran 3 wides, Tom 3, Jason 1, Chis 6, Connor 1, and Peter 2. The only one exempt was Josh but they enjoyed his leg side bowling - hitting it for three fours.
A good try though and the coach will be back to put it right next week.
