First XI Skipper Simon Dixon is optimistic for the coming season after completing a first net session with overseas player Nardus Gobler and the news that Paul Whitlock will return to first team action next season.

Simon says ' 2006 should see continued progress in the first team. The squad of the team remains very much the same as last year, though Paul Whitlock and Sean Tongs will be swapping roles.

Seans experience and coaching will greatly assist the up and coming talent, especially that of Matt Howe and Ewan Bell.

The strength of the first team this year will be in its batting, with all of the top 9 capable of big scores. It is upto the batsman to maintain the progress made last season, and I'm confident all can acheive this. With Paul coming back into the fold, not only will this increase the flexibility of the batting line up, but the bowling will be greatly enhanced as a consequence.

Nardus, our South African lad looks an excellent acquisition. Fingers crossed he will be another Eugene. He bowls at a teriffic pace. If he can simply bowl straight and find the right length, he will be devastating. He looks more than capable with the bat too, which will increase the competition for places in the top order.

Together with Ben, Richey, John, Wrighty, Dave Guymer and Paul we should have enough fire power to dismiss teams this season, which has been our main problem the past couple of years.

Provide we stay injury free, promotion is a distinct possibility'.

Thanks skip I'll remember you said that at the end of July but its great to see your optimistic. Just hope we hold onto our catches.

Hopefully I'll get Mikes view next.
