The Colonal's View
ZAC LEAVES IT LATE
It was the game everyone had been waiting for, Hythe v Southampton Warriors. Warriors had the edge in the table due to Hythe's slip up against Coopervision. Hythe won the toss and had no hesitation in putting the Warriors in to bat. Kev James was given the gloves which allowed big Archie Gilbert the new ball responsibility. A good first over that only yielded six runs that increased the legend that is growing quickly that is Archie Gilbert. With Allistar Cook watching on the chances of losing Archie to the lions tour in Australia are becoming a certainty.
With the Warriors still six wickets to the good on came Kev Mac but a rare bad day in which he conceded 51 off his 3 overs. Zac bowled his array of long hops, wides and general rubbish which meant an old head was needed. On came the Guru. With flight and guile not seen since Headly Verify (which the Guru played with as a youngster) Guru bowling 3 overs for 29 and picking up the key wicket of Deepak. The last few overs proved to be a flurry of wickets with run outs and 2 wickets in the last over for Saunders giving him 2-21. Final score 147-4.
Out came Guru and Kev to open. A series of 3's and wides kept us going but then Kev was run out for 15. Zac then kept it rolling along with the Guru but some good tight overs on the middle halted the run rate. After the Guru was dismissed for 23 some quick runs were needed, a direct hit ended Saunders' one ball stay and a smart caught and bowled put pay to the future England all rounder. 44 off 2 overs needed. It was all over bar the shouting. 500/1 flashed up on the scoreboard for a Hythe win. Kev Mac needed oxygen after Zac was running him hard. 44 came down to 14 off the last ball to tie. Two offside wides made it seven needed.
Surely the Warriors captain could keep his nerve. He was shaking like a crapping dog as he flung down a leg side wide that missed the leg stump by millimetres. Finally a legal delivery that Zac cross batted to the wall. Why didn't he hit for six? Final result a tie. Well done for Zac holding his nerve and finally showing maturity when it was needed. Also well done to Kev Mac for running him hard. A satisfactory result for the Captain but Warriors played their part despite all the colour being drained from their faces after letting it slip. Next game 3/3/13 against Hursley Park.
