| Hythe Win Basement Battle |
The Dragons played their part as Hythe 3's inflicted a 44 run defeat on the M&T's in the Division 2 basement battle.
The M&T's skipper won the toss and elected to field first. Surprised Gareth as he looked round to see what Hythe batsman had arrived. Gareth Mead opened with Guru Tongs (probably the oldest opening pairing in the league) against the youngest opening attack. Lowmans first over went for just 7 whilst Arthur's second went for 9. The opening bowling pair continued but Mead opened up to hit Lowman for a four and a six in the 3rd over. Two boundaries in the 4th by Tongs saw the Hythe pair unbeaten on 17 a piece - Hythe 45 for 0 after 4.
Turrell came on for the 5th over and immeadiately had Mead ct & bd for 17. That brought Scott Everitt-Sharpe to the crease for his first Hythe indoor game. 10 runs came off both the 5th & 6th over - inc Tongs hitting his first six off Holland. Turrells 7th over went for 13 which inc 2x4 wides. Holland then struggled with 2x wides and a no ball - 13 came off the 8th over then in the 9th a Tongs boundary took him to retirement 28* - Hythe 105 for 1 after 9. Sharpe was giving the Guru a taste of his own medicine by running off the final ball - unfortunately for him most of his shots hit the basket on the side wall more times than the back wall.
Bryers stared cautiously before opening up with a 6 off Holland. Bryers was then run out for 10 and in the final over Kev McCarthy did a Matt Young and run out both the Clayhill lads - Everitt-Sharpe for a handy 15 and Steadman for 1. Hythe 131 for 5 at the close. For M&T's Lowman 0-27 off 3 was the tidiest of the bowling.
So M&T's needed 11 an over for their first win of the season. Hythe opened up with Ali Bryers who went for just 5 in his first over. Poor old Scott on the back wall needed his shin pads as he stopped two boundaries with his legs - but then when he went to stop it with his hands - the ball triggled for four. Super Kev then went for 9 to delight of the M&T supporters who remembered his got 5-2 last time out. Holland then opened up - Ali B the man to suffer 3x4's and a six off the over - M&T 33 for 0 after 3 - level on the run rate. But McCarthy changed that in the 4th just 3 singles off then he had Turrell well caught by Tongs for 9 on the back wall. 6 came off Tongs 5th over and then Holland had to retire 25*. M&T's first retirement of the season.
Richard Steadman was then brought into the attack - Lowman hit him for a boundary then a single but the former Dragon got his own back bowling a beauty to hit middle stump. M& T's slipping behind the rate - 48 for 2 after 6 which got worse when Swanny Tongs went for just 3 singles in the 7th. Steadmans 8th over went for 9 and then the Tongs was on for a maiden before his final two balls of his spell both went for sixes from Kendall. Tongs figures though 0-21 off 3. Steadman was then hit for a six by Arthur as M&T's had no alternative but to go for it. Steadmans 3 overs deserved better than 1-22 off 3. Bryers returned for the 11th over and had Wheeler caught & bowled for 5. McCarthy then bowled the last over for 5 - M&T's finishing on 87 for 3.
A good win by Hythe and more impressively their bowlers bowled just 1 wide (3) & 2 no balls (7). Even the old boy behind the stumps only gave away 1 bye. I can't remember the last time Hythe had an extras column that low - great achievement.
