Hythe 3's vs Wellow & Plaitford

Wides The Difference As Wellow Win

Too much xmas pud over the past fortnight has to be the excuse for Hythe's wayward bowling - thus causing us to give away 46 runs in wides to Wellows 13 & resulting to Hythe losing out by 27 runs.

With Jack KO unavailable Gareth Mead stepped up as captain who won the toss and elected to field first. Whilst people were arriving and the gallery was filling up - onlookers were treated to a batting masterclass from 'Inziman' Woods - twice hitting the side wall & into the basket ball net. One Wellow looked and said ' Hythe have a stronger side out today' which earned a chuckle - the League Organizer Jamie King said ' Bramshaw has a guy who gets his leg out of the way like Woodsy and every week smashes a 2 over 30 before retiring - we said no this is Woodsy and he has to hit the ball first.

To Wellows relief Woodsy elected not to play and it was Ali Bryers who had the challenge of bowling to Charlie Fields first. Two dot balls in the first three looked promising until Fields hit the next three for a six, a four and a leave wide 3. Kev McCarthy's 2nd over went for just 6 - Wellow 22 for 0 off 2. A better Bryers third over went for just 9 and McCarthys 4th over went for just 7 - Wellow 39-0 off 4.

With the Wellow batsman now in full flow - Fields hit a second six off Richard Steadman in the 5th as it went for 14 then Zac Millar's first over went for 15. Wellow 67-0 at the half way stage. Steadman had no better joy with the 7th over 4 wides and a six took the score to 82 before Fields retired 27*. Millars next over started with a wicket - Higgins well caught by Tongs for 21. Just 8 came off that over - Wellow 93-1 off 8. Guru bowled the 9th over which started with two dot balls but a Kennedy six and four more meant that 10 came off it. Millar then bowled the best over of the innings - bowling Oliver for 3 and just 4 off - Wellow 108-2 off 10.

Guru bowled the 11th for 5 and then Bryers returned for a 13 run final over. Wellow 126 for 2 - Kev McCarthy Hythe's best figures 0-13 off 2.

With 10 an over required - Hythe needed a good start. Zac almost caused a run out first over but then Millar & Tongs batted sensibly to have 19-0 after 3. A good over for Hythe in the 4th as Tongs hit Higgins for a four - two 3's and then Millar finished it off with a six - (16 run over) Hythe 35-0 off 4 and for the only time up with the run rate. At 43 a Millar four meant retirement. Hythe 44-0 off 5.

Just 7 off the 6th as Gareth Mead got settled in. Orr's 7th over saw the wicket of Mead (caught by Field for 3) and just 3 runs coming off. Tongs retired 25* in the 8th as Hythe started to fall behind the run rate. Looking for quick runs Steadman was run out for 1, Kev McCarthy was then run out for 3. Millar returned to finish on 34 * & Ali Bryers 19* as Hythe ended on 99 for 3 just short of a 2nd bonus point.

Wellow winning by 27 runs - the wide count of 13 - 46 certainly the difference. Well done to Richard Steadman for being the first Clayhill Dragon to participate. Hythe's next game in two weeks time - the basement battle vs Michelmersh 2's
