| Brave Effort From Hythe Five |
Hythe 1’s Fleming Park baptism couldn't have been any tougher as they fell to a 2 wicket defeat at the hands of New Forest Champions Paultons
Hythe went into the game with only five players after Ossie Shaikh dropped out earlier in the day. Pagey won the toss and elected to bat first.
First over went well as 9 came off the over including a boundary to Matt Young. But first ball of the second over Young was bowled with a corker from J.Holgate for 8 which brought Matt Howe to the crease. 8 runs came off the second over but Holgate was impressive and his second over was blocked out for a maiden. Hythe 17 for 1 after 3.
The next 3 overs proved fruitful for Hythe as Smith and Howe got into the swing. Smith hitting 2x6's and a four. Howe too hit two boundaries as Hythe moved to 50 for 1 off 6. 11 came off the 7th over leading to Smith retiring with the score on 67. Another Howe boundary forced him to retire - score 77 for 1 after 8.3 overs. With two new players at the crease Richard Last wasted no time in getting in his first shot being a boundary. But with the score on 94 two wickets fell in quick succession as Last was run out for 7 and Page caught off Lamb for 2. With 9 balls remaining Smith & Howe were back at the crease - 19 came off Holgate's final over whilst both Hythe players were run out looking for extra runs. Smith finished 34, Howe 28. Lamb the pick of the Paultons bowlers 1-28 off 3 but 36 runs in wides helped the Hythe cause.
Five man took to the ring wondering how they were going to keep the runs down. Matt Young's first ball went for six - 17 coming off the first over. That was followed by 15 off Howe's next over Paultons 32 for 0 off 2 not the start Hythe needed. Collins & Wakely looked in total control until the final ball of the 4th over when Last had Collins caught by skipper Page off the wall for 22.
Next over Wakely had to retire then Page run out Hills for 3 - Paultons 62 for 2 off 5. Last then had Lamb caught by Harry Smith for 0 and Hythe were back in the game. 66 for 3. Hythe then had a few chances off the net which with 6 players proably would have had the area covered. Weaver and Holgate took the score to 84 before Smith run out Holgate for 3. Paultons 84 for 4 off 7.3 still needing 32.
Unfortunately though Hythe were having no ball problems as well as wides. and the experienced Wakely 34* and M.Weaver 14* saw off the winning runs with 10 balls remaining. Good effort by Hythe in what will be a very good league.
