Hythe XI @ Beaulieu

SUNDAY FRIENDLY

Sunday 16th September

Sean TONGS 56

Hythe returned to Beaulieu for the first time in 9 years and were heading for defeat when Beaulieu's umpire picked up the stumps and announced that bad light had stopped play to everyone's amazement. Hythe had set Beaulieu 173 to win and they were 145 for 2 off 30.3 with Saunders bowled out.

Lymington's Chris Tollerfield hit a teriffic 90* which included 15x4's and shared in an opening stand off 99 with B.Shorto 29.

Hythe batted first and started badly losing Tom Huxley (0) & Nick Shrive (1) with only 6 on the board. Once again it was Sean Tongs & Rob Saunders who dug in to put on a partnership of 76 in 19 overs to get Hythe out of a hole. Saunders finally went for 26 off 48 balls followed by Sam Mead 7. Tongs brought up yet another fifty with a four but was out soon afterwards for 56 off 59 balls. Zac Millar & Archie Gilbert added 35 before Millar run out Gilbert. for 12. Duell went for a duck, Pete Stevens 7 but Millar hit a late flurry finishing on 47* in Hythe's 172 for 8. For Beaulieu Nigel Betteridge's 1-19 off 8 was excellent.

Beaulieu got off to a good start helped by a series of wides from Duell & Stevens. 33-0 off 5 Saunders took Duell out of the attack and brought on Kev McCarthy. By 15 overs the score had moved onto 78 for 0 and Tollerfield brought up his fifty with a boundary - which prompted the Hythe skipper to bring himself onto bowl. Whilst the Beaulieu batsman waiting to come in were getting nervous at the sight of the colonal's run up - Lymington's South West 4 batsman Tollerfield was licking his lips at facing Hythe First XI's top bowler. The first Saunders over went for 10 as Tollerfield smashed two boundaries. Saunders bounced back though having B.Shorto very well caught one handed by Kev McCarthy at backward point.for 29 - Beaulieu 99 for 1 off 20. At 114 Beaulieu lost a second wicket when Sam Mead had Toon caught by Tongs for 2.

With the sky getting darker - Tollerfield & Jason Shorto had taken the score to 145 for 2 off 30.3 overs when the Beaulieu umpire suddenly moved in from square leg to collect the stumps and decide it was took dark to continue. With Beaulieu only needing 28 off 7 and Saunders bowled out - Hythe didn't argue. Poor old Tollerfield though didn't know what to think 90* inc 15 x 4's. But anyway nice to play our old local rivals once again.
