Friday 20th July

Sean TONGS 40*

One of the best cricketing nights I can remember for a while as Hythe 2nd XI protected a under par score to beat Fawley by 3 runs at Waterside Club.

Hythe made 81 for 4 off their 14 overs after rain prevented a 6.15 start. Sean Tongs made 40* in 1s & 2s. Hythe only boundary came with a Pagey 6. Hythe's experienced bowling attack then came into play and the Oilers finished just short.

Hythe won the toss and Mike Bowman had no hesitation in batting. The game reduced to a 14 overs game because of rain.

Sean Tongs & James Page opened for Hythe and the spectators couldn't believe what they were seeing as the Guru dotted out the first Ben Bolton over for a maiden. By the half way stage Hythe had moved onto 39-0 and finding the going tough . The bookies were taking odds at this stage of a Hythe total of 55-70.

Page blasted Dave Streather for a six (Hythe's only boundary in the whole game) before finally falling in the 8th over when he was bowled by Cole for 17. Froggett fell trying the reverse sweep (1), Tom Porter made 10 before he was run out with 2 overs to go. Earl then had Bowman caught for 3 and Hythe finished on 81 for 4 (Tongs 40*) For Fawley who were excellent in the field - Ben Bolton the pick of the bowlers 4 overs 1-19

5.8 an over on a massive ground looked comfortable for Fawley. Richie Froggett opened for Hythe and got the big wicket of Dave Streather 4th ball for 1. After 3 overs Fawley were 13 for 1. Earl smashed Mike Edwards for 4 but was then a little unlucky to be judged LBW off the 4th ball of the 4th over. 17-2

5 runs came off the 5th over them Edwards had Leach well caught by Chalky White for 8. 27-3 at the half way stage - skipper Alfie Cole and L.Smith looked to pick things up with the hit & run policy but after putting on 14 Smith was bowled by Wayne Effeny for 10. Phillips made 1 before White took another catch - this time off Simon Wright - Fawley 41 for 5 off 10.

Ten an over now needed 6 came off the 11th over the 11 came off Wright's 12th over. 27 off 2 overs required - Godden hit Effeny for 4 but then Effeny got his own back with the wicket of Cole - stumoed by Kev James for 23. Final over bowled by Richie Froggett 14 required two byes and a single off the first 3 balls was followed by a Coutts six. 5 runs needed off 2 balls - the fifth ball went for a single then a dot ball for a Hythe win.

Great effort in the field by the Hythe lads which supported some fine bowling Mike Edwards and Wayne Effeny both 2-17 off 4, Froggett 1-19 off 4, Wrighty 1-11 off 2.

Hythe now play Sway in the final who are going for 3 in a row.
