HAMPSHIRE LEAGUE SOUTH WEST DIV 3

Saturday 2nd June 2012

Hythe 3's won their second league game of the season with a hard fought win at Hunts Farm. Jonjo Stovell 56 and Dan Pates 41* set up a decent Hythe total of 194 for 4 the only downside an injury to Pates which is likely to keep him out for a while. Langley also had to bat with 10 men through injury but Ian Prentice finally found some form to take 4-31.

On a good track at Hunts Farm - Tom Huxley again won the toss and had no heitation in batting first. A strong breeze did assist the bowlers and the Hythe openers of Nick Shrive and Jonjo Stovell started cautiously. By 10 overs Hythe had moved onto 32-0 with Stovell starting to find the boundaries. At drinks Hythe had moved onto 69-0 with Stovell closing in on a half century. 23rd over though Langley Manor got the breakthrough when Batten had Shrive caught by Jewell for 26.

That brought Dan Pates to the crease and he and Stovell were now up against spin at both ends. The pair added another 46 before Stovell was caught & bowled for 56inc 9x4's. Tom Huxley made just 1 before he was caught off Jewell. Pates continued to look good until at 146 for 3 in the 34th over he was forced to retire with a groin strain. Shame for Hythe but they now had over 100 years of experience in the middle with Gareth Mead joining Pete Stevens (sorry guys) You'd never guessed as the pair hit the boundary with consistency. At 167 Hythe lost Mead caught off Elson for 11 and then Stevens fell bowled by Parker for 19. Tom Nicholas smashed 2x4's to finish 14* & Ian Prentice 7* but disappointingly for the second week running Hythe got so close to maximum batting points without achieving it.

Hythe went into the field with 10 players and Gareth Mead behind the stumps. Sam Page got them off to a good start when he had Rye caught by Stovell for 9. Three overs later Page had his second wicket when Passingham was caught behind by Mead for 2. LM 28-2 off 9.

Ken Morrison and P.Jerram looked to be cementing a good partnership when Chiverton bowled Jerram for 23. The game then turned in Hythe's favour with a double bowling change. Ian Prentice bowled the unlucky Morrison for 23 with his first ball - then McCarthy with his first ball bowled Parker for 4. With his next over first ball again McCarthy grabbed another wicket - bowling Lock for 4. LM 72 for 6 off 18 overs.

S.Elson & A.Batten silenced Hythe's spirits for 8 overs adding 50 before Elson was bowled by Prentice for 22. Chiverton then caught Jewell off Prentice for 2 and Prentice took his 4th wicket when he had Murphy caught by the excellent Gareth Mead for 2. Langley Manor all out for `140 with poor A.Batten stranded not out on 41.

A good all round performance from the Green Caps - 2-2 now for the season and only two more wins from sured safety.
