Howe's 99 Sets Up Hythe Win

Matt HOWE 99

inc 1x6 & 10x4

Hythe Sun XI made it 2 wins in 2 with a 5 wkt win over Compton & Chandlers Ford @ Jones Lane in another good game between the two sides.

Set 183 to win in 40 overs First XI skipper Matt Howe top scored with 99 inc 1x6 & 10x4's.

Compton & C/F won the toss and elected to bat first in their first match of the season. The decision looked dodgy as two wickets from Ian Prentice and two top class pieces of fielding by James Page had the visitors reeling at 26 for 5. Things got worse when Anderson had R.Spearing judged LBW for 0 - C&C/F 30 for 5 off 13 overs.

By drinks Compton had moved onto 54 for 5 as Andy Murkitt and Jon Gray started the recovery. The pair added a partnership of 117 in 22 overs - before Gray was out caught by Josh Mead off Saunders for 63 and innings which included 8x4's & 2x6's - 147-6

Saunders then bowled Howarth for 5 and soon after Murkitt fell caught by Jack Knight-Owen off Anderson for a very good 76.(5x4's & 3x6's). Compton's innings closed on the final ball of the innings all out for 182 good recovery. For Hythe the frontline bowling off Josh Mead, Ian Prentice & Shaun did the early damage.

Needing to spen time in the middle - Hythe opened with first team pair Howe & Anderson. After a steady start the pair put on 79 in 19 overs before two wickets fell in one over. Anderson when looking solid run himself out for 28 and two balls later Tongs was caught behind off Gray for a rare quack. At drinks with 20 overs left Hythe needed 101 and Howe began to play his shots - bringing up his fifty in the 23rd over. Page was out judged LBW to Gray for 3 but Hythe remained in control with a partnership of 58 in 10 overs between Howe and Zac Millar. With Howe on 99 and the gallery on their feet ready to applaud a fine ton - Howe was bowled for 99 by Gray. His innings included 10x4's & 1x6. - 151-4 off 32 overs.

Josh Mead hit three smashing fours in an innings of 16 before being bowled by Howarth but with 13 balls remaining Millar kept calm to hit the winning runs in an innings of 18* Jack Night-Owen finished 1 not out.

As always another good game between two similar clubs in status. Both first teams went down last year and their seconds both went up. Both clubs committed to build on youth.
