HAMPSHIRE LEAGUE SOUTH WEST DIV 3
| HYTHE 3rd XI vs CALMORE SPORTS IV |
Saturday 5th May 2012
| 3's Well Beaten In League Opener |
Hythe 3's delight at getting their opening fixture on against Calmore lV's turned to disappointment as they were well beaten by 84 runs up at Thornberry Avenue on Saturday. Hythe included Dan Pates and Nick Riley on debut in what looked on paper a decent side.
Skipper Tom Huxley won the toss and as anyone would elected to field first on a slow damp wicket. Both sides agreed to trial out the orange ball for the Hampshire League and Huxley opened with Alex Nicholas and Jonjo Stovell. Jonjo gave the Green Caps a good start bowling C.Kinchington in only the 5th over for 8. Calmore 23 for 1.
Hythe then had to wait til the 18th over for a second breakthrough when G.Kinchington was caught by Nicholas off McCarthy for 7 - 67 for 2 and at drinks the score had moved onto 76 for 2. Anything more than 120 was going to be difficult to chase and opener Ben Johns began to play his shots. Chiverton should have had him twice in two balls - first he was dropped behind by Archie Gilbert and then next ball Chiverton himself dropped a caught & bowled.
25th over a 3rd wicket when Ali Bryers bowled Nicholson for 4 in his first over and then Sam Page bowled Matt Taylor for 3. Johns brought up his fifty and then he and G.Woodhall added another 59 in the final 3 overs to take the score to 169 for 4. Johns finishing on a very good 80*. For Hythe Kev McCarthy pick of the bowlers 1-19 off 8.
Hythe's batting got off to the worst possible start when they lost Stovell and skipper Tom Huxley in the 5th over. That brought together the two debutants and things were going well for 8 overs. Pates hit a big six and Riley looked good as the anchorman. But two wicets in five overs saw them both depart - Pates going for another big hit was well caught by Marh Taylor for 10 and Riley was bowled by Gilmour for 12.
Archie Gilbert came in and top scored with 14 as the rest failed to make double figures. Hythe all out in 40 overs for just 85.
Well done to the young Calmore side - they could have quite easily have brought in their ringers form the 1s, 2s and 3s. In the end didn't need to. As for Hythe we'll have to get better.
