Under 14s Wide of The Mark & Then Caught Out

Hythe Under 14's final game in the South Hampshire Indoor League ended with a defeat against Totton & Eling. The lads always knew it was going to be a tough experience and they finished with a 1-5 record.

Ben Fenton small.

In what was the final Under 14s game Skipper Gilbert lost the toss, having only won 1 in the seven games, Totton chose to bat first. Hythe opened the bowling with Fenton and he struck with his third ball by clean bowling Holland for 1. A second wicket fell in an indifferent fashion when Mills was run out, with Fenton and the batsman colliding and then keeper Gilbert looking like he fell over the stumps.

Ollie Pike bowled the second over and the 3rd and final wicket fell, Molyneux running out Holmes for 0. The third over was a brilliant over from Fenton, who has bowled well over the past few months. From this point on Hythe looked to have taken the foot off the gas and were letting Totton who were 5-3 back into the game. Pike bowled out his 3 overs and went for 33 without picking up a wicket.

Kelly bowled his 3 overs and after a shaky start bowling at the left hand soon found movement both in the air and off the pitch, Chiv was surprised. Molyneux had just the 1 over and seemed to struggle going for 14. Debutant Swainston came on to bowl his new off spinners and whilst there was a few wides he tested the batsman and bowled well. Totton & Eling 109-3

Hythe opened the batting with Molyneux and Pike and it was in the 3rd over the first wicket fell, that of Molyneux bowled by Woodcock for 2. Kelly was in at number 3 and was given licence to play shots, he managed to hit a 6 off his first ball. However, the pinch hitting didn’t last long he was out on his third ball after hitting it into the netting and was caught for 7.

The 4th batsman was skipper Gilbert, but it was opener Pike who was next to go after playing a replica of the shot Kelly had played, caught out for 2. Fenton came to the crease ant the 2 leading runs scorers began to try and get Hythe back into the game. Gilbert hit 2 sixes and 1 four and fenton looked to nudge the ball into the gaps, the real story of the partnership that was 41 in total was the lack of running between the wickets. It was Gilbert who lost his wicket again trying to hit over the top but with men on the back wall was caught out with a one handed catch by George.

Swainston came in at number 6 on debut and managed to get a single into the wall but was the caught out by George, who ended up taking 4 catches. Fenton was again left stranded and was still looking to try and win, He managed balls into the wall and also a four down the ground. However, he had run out of partners and had to try and go over the top with the field set in and ended up caught and bowled by Holland.

Story of the innings was some poor shot selection and the nonexistent running between the wicket – not a single 3 was scored. In what was a winnable game Hythe didn’t play the situation and again lost all their wickets. Gilbert ends the league as Hythe’s top run scorer – 133 runs at 22.2, Fenton achieved the highest individual score of 46. Top wicket taker was Pike who picked up 7 at 27 a piece, Fenton picked up 4 at 41. Both Fenton & Kelly achieved the lowest runs per over rate with 9.71.
