Hythe Under 11's vs LANGLEY MANOR
Played @ Houndsdown School
| Under 11's Lose in Final Ball Thriller |
Hythe with 3 Under 9 debutants produced a great performance before going down to Langley Manor by 1 run last night.
Caitlin Smith, Ben Jones and Monty Gilbert all made their competative debuts. Hythe still have an outside chance of making the end of season play-offs if they beat O.T & Romsey next time out.

Hythe Indoor under 11s handed out 3 Club League debuts on Friday to B Jones, K Smith and M Gilbert in what was a much changed side from the previous 3 games. With this in mind credit has to go to Coach Millar for the way his under 9s performed in the game and stepped up to the task. Credit must also go to Langley Manor who showed great respect for a young Hythe side with in the spirit of the game.
In his first game as a club captain T Jones lost the toss and Langley choose to bat first. With his younger brother, B Jones, was behind the stump, T Jones bowled the first over that that went for just 4 runs. F Smith bowled the second over and the Langley batsman showed that they meant business, working the ball for threes and scoring 16 off it.
K Smith bowled the third over and bowled well with 8 runs conceded the run rate was slowed. Jones bowled the 4th and again the Langley batsman looked to work the ball and a couple of miss fields led to 2 fours and Hatton retiring on 24 not out in what was a good knock. To bowl the 5th over was M Gilbert who was playing his first competitive league game for the Green Caps. His over went for 11 but to be fair it was more the length that was challenging for the youngest Gilbert rather than the line.
After this Hythe looked to put the brakes on the run rate. Tom Jones picked up a wicket, clean bowling Sewell round his legs, Jones currently has 7 indoor wickets with an average of 9.1 and is going at 4.6 runs an over. Ferrier bowled well picking up a wicket off his first ball with a well timed catch of the wall and in his 2 over Ferrier only went for 13. F Smith’s last 2 overs only went for 12 and with Jones only conceding 1 off the last over Langley were 76 – 2 at the interval.
Hythe opened the batting with B Jones & Ferrier and the pair looked to build a partnership. With the pair starting by knocking the ball into the wall the running between the wicket soon began to happen. Both batsperson got 4s, from over throws, but it was Ferrier who fell first for 9, currently he is averaging 11 indoors. B Jones, who was also on debut managed to score 8 runs before being run out by his brother who came in at number 3. The opening pair had guided Hythe to 43 without loss.
T Jones & the 4th batsperson F Smith came in and had to look to push the run rate on. With Langley struggling in their second round of overs Hythe looked to take advantage with some good running between the wickets. F Smith was bowled out and this meant his sister was into bat at number 5. K Smith who was the third debutant and managed to run to pick up 2 and get T Jones on strike but she was bowled out for 2 soon after.
Last person in was M Gilbert and he managed to get 3 off his first ball to get T Jones on strike, even if it did mean a dive was needed. In what was a thrilling final over a 4 from over throws was picked up with good running by both M Gilbert & T Jones. M Gilbert was the run out off what should have been the last ball needing 4 for a win but it was a wide ball. M Gilbert out for 3 in a vital last partnership. T Jones who was the last batsperson needed 1 for the tie of 2 for the win off the last ball and Hatton held his nerve and it was a dot.
An excellent display from both sides played with a great spirit. The green caps should be proud of the way they fought in a game with key players missing. B Jones let 1 bye through all game and kept very well in his first ever match. K Smith showed her worth in the field with some sharp stops and M Gilbert was there at the end of the innings to almost turn the game for Hythe. At the close - Hythe 75 – 5 (lost by 1 run)
