Hythe & Dibden U14s indoor side slipped to a 3 wicket defeat in the South Hants Indoor Cricket Cup last night with a defeat to Romsey & OT’s.

Skipper Gilbert lost the toss and the green caps were put into bat after a 2 month break. Hythe opened the innings with Gilbert and Pike and the pair got off to a good start. The pair nudging the ball into the corners and then with some very good backing up they picked up several 3s. It was a partnership that was broken when Pike was bowled round his legs trying to leave one down the legside. Pike out for 13 bowled by Fernell.

This wicket unfortunately leads to a flurry of wickets falling in quick succession. Fenton was in at 3 but was out bowled for 4 and then Mould was bowled out for a golden duck. Molyneux was quickly rushed in at number 5 but he as well failed to hang around and was out for 2 bowled by Briston. All this with Gilbert still looking to score runs to post a decent total.

Hythe collapsed from 40 without loss to 58-4 in the space of 2 overs. The final batsman in was Kelly and he started the task of batting with Gilbert. Kelly instantly looked to find the corners and picking up the runs. Gilbert hit the only six of the innings as the pair brought Hythe past 100. Kelly fell soon after with an excellent sharp catch at what is indoor short leg with a ball that came of the middle of Kellys bat – Caught out for 13. Gilbert who played superbly throughout was eventually run out with 1 ball left of the innings, in what was a ball that hit the umpires foot at square leg, Run Out for 41.

Hythe opened the bowling with Fenton and he looked to take control with a solid first over which gave away no extras and tested the batsman. Kelly took the second over and OTs looked to push the ball about and run. With OTs picking up 10 3s in the first 4 overs it clear that they were not going for boundaries so the field was brought in. These runs hadn’t been without risk – at least 3 run outs were missed in the opening overs.

Hythe began to take control of the run rate with only 6 picked up in the 5th over and then 4 in the 6th and the pressure showed with a run out – George on 25. With OTs starting to pick up too many of their runs through wides and no balls the Green Caps struggled to keep the run rate down. 2 further wickets fell in the form of run outs but OTs made it home with an over to spare.

Fielding by the side was of a high standard with plenty of stops to help slow the run rate in the middle overs. Eventually it came down to not a big enough total set and the extras given away during bowling.
