Hythe's Season Ends In Defeat

Sean TONGS - 40s

Hythe fell to a 4 wkt defeat in their final game of the 2011 season at Westbourne. Playing with ten men skipper Saunders shocked both teams when he elected to bat first on a damp unreliable wicket.

Paul Kenworthy played his first game for two years scoring a steady 10 whilst adding 23 for the 3rd wicket with Tongs. The Guru finally fell for 40 with the score on 104 and only a gritty 12 by Archie Gilbert helped the Hythe score to 140 for 8 at tea.

Hythe needed early wickets and skipper Saunders obliged with Westbourne's run machine and captain R.Dickin being caught by Gilbert for 0. Haines smasehd a six off Smith before Saunders had him caught by Gilbert for 7. Bone hit 2x6's & 2x4's before becoming Saunders 3rd wicket - bowled for 20.

Hythe were in with a shout but Beaven and Eyres steadied the ship and at drinks Westbourne were 62 for 3 needing only 79 off the final 20. The pair added 47 for the 4th wicket before Beaven 35 was run out by a good throw from Tongs for McCarthy to take the bails off. Saunders returned to bowl Kehagais for 8 and when Smth bowled Rogers for 35 with the homeside still needed 15 off 4 overs.

But Hodges 12* and Malley 6* saw Westbourne home with 7 balls remaining. Spirited effort by ten man Hythe but probably 20 runs light batting first.
