UNDER 17’s LOSE IN CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH LANGLEY MANOR.
| |
| Zac MILLAR - Retired 51* |
The last match of the season proved to be one of the closest, with Langley Manor winning on the penultimate ball.
Hythe & Dibden were first to bat with Harry Smith and Zac Millar opening. Unfortunately, Harry couldn’t keep up his excellent batting form and holed out for 2. Elliott Carley joined Millar and the two took the score to 27 before Carley was bowled for 5. Elliott played some nice shots and showed what a good prospect he is. Matt Young and Millar, with some sensible batting took the score to 85 before Millar reached his 50.(2*6’s) and (4*4’s); a very good innings. Todd Powell was bowled for 2 by a ball that bounced a second time in front of the stumps. Chris Griffin hit a single in the last over and Young hit the last two balls for a 4 and a six. (Good sportsmanship was shown by Langley – the last ball hit for a six being caught but with the catcher stepping over the boundary rope).
Hythe innings closed at 104 – 3.
In reply Langley Manor started slowly against the twin slow bowling attack of Harry Smith and Jack Knight-Owen. Smith bowled very tidily and although he did not take a wicket he only conceded 13 runs off 4 overs. Langley were 24 after 6 overs when Todd Powell had Hillman lbw. Langley continued at a steady pace until Zac Millar took a really good one handed catch of Tom Smith to dismiss Budd for 20. Meanwhile Wateridge was causing chaos with reverse cuts, cheeky runs and dropped catches; he retired on 55 not out. Matt Young handed over the gloves to Harry Smith and bowled 2 overs claimed the wicket of Payne. Jordan Blandford bowling a tidy line had Morrison lbw and Zac Millar had the task of bowling the last over with 3 runs needed for a Langley victory. A two came of the first ball and then Arnison was caught off the second ball – Langley needed one run from 4 balls. The next two balls were near wides and the last but one ball was hit for 2. Langley Manor won by 5 wickets.
So the Under 17's finish 8th in the final standings. Certainly a good effort with a side made up with Under 15's.
CAPTAINS/MANAGERS SUMMARY
No one could say this was an auspicious season. However, what was noticeable was the improvement in all round performances as the season advanced. Some players did not get a chance to really prove themselves but they continued to give their support by being excellent team members. Chris Griffin played in every game. Three players only missed one game. ( Michael Burke, Alex Nicholas and Todd Powell). A special thank you to the under 15’s members who played so well.
