GOOD ALL ROUND PERFORMANCE SECURES UNDER 17’s WIN AT BRANSGORE.

 James Bidwell
James BIDWELL 36*

Bransgore won the toss and elected to bat on a cloudy evening. Hythe’s opening bowlers Kieran Chalmers and Alex Nicholas kept it tight with only 10 runs coming from the first four overs. In his second over Nicholas bowled Butcher. Bransgore were struggling . Todd Powell and Matt Young bowled the next four overs and took a wicket a piece. After 8 overs Bransgore were 32 for 3. A good partnership between Green and Carrington was finally broken when Michael Burke threw an excellent return from the boundary and Button was run out as a result. Bransgore were 65 – 4 after 12 overs. Green was finally caught behind by Zac Millar off Nicholas for 34. Chalmers bowled Bull with his final ball (conceding only 6 runs in his 4 overs). The bowling was effective with Nicholas 2 for 25, Powell 2 for 18 and Young 2 for 20. Bransgore completed their 18 overs scoring 103 for 8. The Bransgore umpire was strict giving 17 wides and 4 no balls, but he was fair, as the Bransgore bowlers also suffered likewise.

Hythe commenced their innings in gathering gloom at 7.50 pm. James Bidwell (promoted to opener) and Keiran Chalmers gave Hythe a good start but at 21runs Chalmers was adjudged to have nicked a ball to the keeper and was out for 9. Matt Young joined Bidwell and the two of them hit some good boundaries before Young was also caught behind for 30 (5 x 4’s). Hythe were 79-2 off 14 overs at this stage. Zac Millar joined Bidwell and they built the score to 92 from 16 overs. The 17th over was eventful to say the least. First ball bowled was a no ball and was dispatched over the pavilion by Millar for 6. This no ball was followed by a wide, 2 wides and a further wide. The first legitimate ball was hit by Bidwell for 2. The 13 runs required to win came effectively off the only ball of the over. The innings closed at 105 -2 with Hythe winning by 8 wickets.

James Bidwell showed everyone, with bit more technique and coaching, he could become a very good batsman. He carried his bat for a commendable 36 not out.

Well done lads – a good all round performance.

Thanks to the parents who supported & transported the team, and in particular to Tom Nicholas for umpiring. He looked the part in his white umpiring coat!
