FIRSTS WELL BEATEN
Hythe 1st XI's long trip into West Berkshire to play Hungerford ended in a 7 wicket defeat. Hythe batted first scoring a well below par 156 all out - Rob James scored 43 and Ewan Bell 30. Hungerford took just 32 overs to reach their target. Hythe need to raise their game in the coming weeks to avoid slipping further down the table.

Hampshire County Division 2

Saturday 11th June

Hythe’s first XI crashed to defeat in Berkshire on Saturday as Hungerford secured a seven wicket win over the Green Caps.

The visitors lost the toss and were inserted to bat. With regular opener Matt Young away at the Isle of Wight festival, Mike Edwards opened up with Rob James.

The pair began well in difficult conditions against Prestoe (2-28) and Van Rensburg (3-39). However, with the score on 36 Edwards was superbly caught at short cover to start a Hythe rot.

Later in the over captain Matt Howe was dismissed for a duck before James Page also fell next over without scoring to take Hythe from 36-0 to 37-3. John Roberts (12 inc. 2x4’s) then put on a small recovery with James but when he and Harry Smith fell in quick succession, the visitors were once again struggling on 58-5.

The Green Caps were then brought back to respectability by the tail as a 52 run partnership between James (43 inc. 5x4’s) and new man in Ewan Bell (30 inc. 4x4’s) saw the visitors over the 100 mark. At the end of the innings Richard Froggett struck a quick 10 while Gary Howe contributed another powerful knock of 27 (inc. 3x4’s & 1x6’s) as Hythe finished on a meagre 156.

The Green Caps were quickly up against it in Hungerford’s reply as opening batsman S Annettes took a liking to Froggett. When a rain break delayed the game after 3.5 overs the hosts had rushed onto 20 without loss.

After the break things continued in the same vein for Hythe as Annettes (98 inc. 18x4’s & 1x6’s) and Burkitt (38 inc. 5x4’s) took Hungerford to the brink of victory. In the end Hythe were scrambling to pick up any bowling points but, after a partnership of 137, Burkitt was clean bowled by Howe, before Annettes chipped a catch to Harry Smith at square-leg off Edwards to fall agonisingly short of his century.

Hythe picked up a third wicket when Howard was run out backing up by a fortunate deflection off bowler Howe but by then the damage was done. After some fools play from the Hungerford batsmen at the end they finally hit the winning runs and Hythe’s long trek to Berkshire had resulted in only five points being accumulated.
