Hythe Firsts were well beaten at Portsmouth last Saturday and with it went their unbeaten record. Portsmouth batted first scoring 222 for 5 (Tom Richards 2-26). In reply Hythe crumbled to 132 all out (Gary Howe 30 & John Roberts 30) the best of Hythe's response.

PORTSMOUTH II's vs HYTHE 1st XI

Hampshire County Division 2

Saturday 28th May

Hythe and Dibden First XI crashed to their first defeat of the season away at Portsmouth II’s.

Gary HOWE 32

On an extraordinarily cold and windy day in Hampshire’s second city, Hythe won the toss and set out into the field.

The hosts began quite slowly but steadily and put on 56 for the first wicket between Henning (35) and Dawson (14) before both fell in quick succession. Harry Smith picked up Dawson after a sharp stumping from Gary Howe while Richard Froggett dismissed Henning after having him dropped the ball before.

Indeed Hythe’s fielding was not at its best during the first innings and Portsmouth continued to build in the blustery conditions.

The Green Caps did manage to make a few steady inroads with Tom Richards taking 2-26 and Rob Saunders 1-55 to reduce the hosts to 130-5. However, that brought Oliffe (70*) and Flemming (20*) together to the crease and they shared an unbeaten 92 run partnership. Oliffe, in particular, was devastating in pulverising a chanceless 70 – including 20 off the last over from Matt Howe.

In reply, Hythe started poorly and struggled against the pace of Dawson who dismissed Rob James, Matt Howe and Simon Wright. With usual opener Matt Young unable to bat early on because of an illness it left John Roberts to try and revive the innings. However, with the run-rate at a measly 2 runs per over at the half-way stage, the game was quickly getting away. Then Young, Richards and Smith all fell for single figures, while Roberts was dismissed for a well-made 30 (inc. 4x4’s) to leave Hythe on 55-7.

In the end, the Green Caps’ tail wagged with Richard Froggett (16) and Gary Howe (32 inc. 7x4’s) putting on 27 together before Howe and Russell Moore (13*) put on 49 for the ninth wicket to take Hythe up to their eventual finishing score of 132 all out.
