Sunday Cracker Sees 1 Wkt Win For Hythe

Matt Young’s second century of the season gave Hythe and Dibden’s Sunday XI a pleasant four wicket win over Portsmouth based side Hammond Walleys who were visiting Jones Lane for the first time.

Luckily for both sides the weather threatened early on but held off throughout the day, allowing the visitors to win the toss and bat first. After some poor bowling from Russell Moore, Kev McCarthy joined Tom Huxley in the attack and both men picked up a wicket in their spells. Huxley’s 8-2-17-1 being particularly impressive.

Matt Howe and Rob James then came into the attack as they tried to keep Wally’s Hammond’s innings down to a competitive score. James picked up two wickets for 38 while Howe took one for 23 as the visitor’s scoring rate slowed. At the end Tom Richards and John Roberts both had a bowl with Roberts striking twice for just two runs to end the innings on 182-7. Wally’s Hammond’s score mainly down to Norris (53), Tutton (32) and Kelly (58).

In reply Hythe opened with Young and Richards who put on 31 together before Richards was caught and bowled for 23. Sean Tongs (17) and Roberts (10) then put on small partnerships with the ever confident Young although with their dismissals and Jack Knight-Owen’s duck, Hythe were stumbling on 105-4. However, while Young was at the crease the game was in the Green Cap’s hands and this proved the case as a quick 48 run partnership between Young and Moore (12) put Hythe back in total command.

Although Rob Saunders was run out for two trying to get Young his hundred, it came off the next ball with just four runs needed to win. After a three for Young, Matt Howe wasted no time in striking a four first ball to seal the win and end the game. Young’s impressive knock of 103* contained 11 fours and two sixes. A good game against a friendly bunch of guys.
