HYTHE SUN XI Vs COMPTON & C/FORD

Sunday 15th May

Sunday Cracker Sees 1 Wkt Win For Hythe

Zac MILLAR 58

Hythe Sunday XI won a thrilling encounter with Compton and Chandlers Ford by chasing down 219 to win with just one wicket and 15 balls to spare.

The Green caps lost the toss and were put into the field with first team bowlers Rob Saunders and Russell Moore opening the bowling. In the first ball of his first over Moore took the opening wicket but after that S. Spearing (58) frustrated Hythe with his eccentric shot selections. Saunders came off after four overs and was replaced by Alex McMillan while Moore bowled out his eight overs for 22 with Rob James taking over from the top end.

McMillan and James then cut through the Compton middle order with McMillan picking up three quick wickets including Spearing who was caught by Luke Mills. Rob James then got in the act when he picked up the first of his three wickets with Moore taking the catch – his first of three in the innings. McMillan finished with figures of 6-1-35-3 while James finished with 8-2-23-3. With Hythe well on top they let the initiative slip slightly with Sam Page and Zac Millar going for 56 between them, although Page did pick up the wicket of Williams for 10. The hosts eventually bowled out the visitors in the final over with Luke Mills dismissing Murkitt for 53 after a good catch from Moore.

Hythe, chasing 219 to win, began with Jonjo Stovell and Sean Tongs . Both players found the boundary early although Stovell gave his wicket away with the score on 16 when he missed a straight one. Jack Knight-Owen also looked positive early on before foolishly running himself out from a direct hit.

Tongs was then joined by James Page and the pair rebuilt the innings with Tongs 31 (inc. 6x4’s) and Page 32 (inc. 5x4’s) taking Hythe past 100. When Tongs was dismissed Zac Millar came to the crease and looked in fine form. With wickets beginning to fall around him, Millar kept his head and recorded a well-crafted half century. When Page and Luke Mills were out in the same over it was getting tense for the hosts, especially as both Rob James and Alex McMillan then also failed to reach double figures.

Compton and Chandlers Ford then took the big wicket of Millar for 58 (9x4’s 7 1x6) leaving just Sam Page, Russell Moore and Rob Saunders to knock off the remaining 41 runs.

However, that was all Hythe needed as Page 22 (inc. 1x6 & 1x4) and Moore 20* (inc. 3x4’s) took Hythe to the brink before captain Saunders 4* (inc. 1x4) delivered the final blow.
