LAST PAIR SEAL WIN FOR HYTHE
 |
| Harry SMITH 5-27 |
After a poor pre-season Hythe 1st XI bounced back to win their opening league game of the season against East Tytherley. In a tense finish at Jones Lane Hythe's 10th wkt pair of Tom Richards (40) & Rob Saunders 9* (Yes Rob Saunders) put on the 23 runs needed for victory with 4 balls remaining. Earlier Matt Young hit 56 and Harry Smith took 5 for 27.
Matt Howe won the toss and had no hesitation in fielding first on a drying wicket. C.Smith & D.Babbage set about the Hythe openers Rich Froggett and Simon Wright with 78 coming from the first 10 overs. In the 11th Froggett claimed first blood - having Babbage caught behind for 25. Next over and Tytherley were two down - Saunders having C.Smith caught by Harry Smith for a very decent 66. E.T 92 for 2 off 12.
At 101 Saunders had E.T skipper Edwards caught by Matt Young for 1 (big scalp) and 4 runs later Froggett bowled Kersey for 11 - E.T 105 for 4. Froggett finished a 9 over spell 2-54 to be replaced by Harry Smith. 3 overs in and Smith had Allen caught by Roberts for 9. E.T then moved the score onto 150 for 5 thanks largely to Neagle 50. Saunders finished his spell of 10 overs 2-53. Smith then bowled Peace for for 6 at 158 and then the next 4 wickets fell for just 21 runs. Harry Smith ended with 5 for 27 off his 10 overs and the other wicket fell to Mike Edwards.
Hythe needing 180 to win opened with Rob James and Matt Young on first team league debut. Hythe started cautiously with 19 coming off the first 7 overs. Rob James was then caught off Pearce for 11 - Hythe 25 for 1. Skipper Matt Howe joined Young in the middle but six runs later was bowled by Pearce for 4. A 61 run partnership then occurred between Young and Mike Edwards in 11 overs before Edwards was caught behind off Kersey for 22. Hythe 90 for 3 off 22.
Young looking in very good nick smashed Allen for two sixes before bringing up a fine fifty inc 6x4's & 3x6s. He finally went though for 56 caught off Neagle.- Hythe 120 for 4 off 30. Tom Richards then struggled for partners as Hythe's middle order collapsed. Roberts 2, Smith 11, Wright 2, Froggett and Gary Howe 4 leaving Hythe 160 for 9 with only Duck record holder - Colonal Saunders to come. Richards relished the responsibilty and the colonal backed him up as the pair battled their way to the 23 runs required to win with 4 balls remaining. Richards finishing 40* and Saunders 98.
Great opening win and now a even bigger challenge next week on the Island.
