Hythe 3's vs Sway 3's

Hythe Youngsters No Walkover

Sam LONG 19 & 0-26

A Depleted Hythe 3's Side Packed With Youngsters Put In a Great Effort Before Going Down To Sway 3's By 27 Runs On Sunday. Ali Bryers, Sam Long and Richard Jones all Made Their Indoor Debuts And Reduced Sway To Just 111 in a good natured encounter at Priestlands.

With 3 experienced regulars unavailable Hythe skipper Jonjo Stovell had no alternative but to turn to the colts as Hythe 3's made their 2nd appearance of the season in division 3 of the Indoor League. Stovell lost the toss and Sway skipper Pete Bennett had no hesitation in batting first on a slower mat than the one used for the first two weeks of competition.

With Stovell having to conduct thing from behind the stumps - Hythe worked hard in the field to keep Sway openers Dave Hurrell and Ian Stone down to runs off the side walls. With the score on 45 in the 5th over the Green Caps got a breakthrough when Stone was run out by Richard Jones for 11. Hurrell began to open up with a flurry of boundaries which brought about his retirement. Super Kev bowled the dangerous Charles Smith and when Sway skipper Pete Bennett was unluckily run out by Stovell for 0 Sway were 64 for 3.

Matt Brearley and James Howard (helped by a sequence of wides) repaired the score to 88 before Brearley was run out by Ali Bryers for 10. That meant the return of Dave Hurrell and he and J.Howard saw out the final 2 overs to take the score to 111 for 4. Hurrell finishing on an impressive 38*

For Hythe Kev McCarthys figures of 1-15 off 3 were exceptional but he would be the first to acknowledge the fine fielding display of the youngsters. Sam Long's 0-26 off 3 was an excellent showing for a first outing.

112 to win and Stovell opened with himself and Richard Jones. 10 came off the first over thanks to some early no balls. Jones then hit a lovely four before losing his head and playing a poor shot to be bowled by Howard for 4. At 23 Hythe lost their skipper when Stovell was judged LBW off Howard for 4.

Bennett then turned to 'pie chucker' Hurrell to tease the batsman (sorry Dave) and the veteran had instant success when Josh Mead missed one coming out of the light fittings and was stumped for 2. Kev McCarthy and Sam Long then started to look menacing with some very good running between the wickets before McCarthy was left stranded for 15. Bryers 4 was then run out by some clever work from Stone in the field leaving Long as last man but at 84 Bryers was run out again by excellent fielding from Smith - Long out for 19. A good effort from Hythe but a deserved win for Sway.

C.Smith was the pick of the bowlers for Sway 1-11 off 2.4 with the 'piechucker' Dave Hurrell 1-14 off 2.

Skipper Jonjo wasn't too downbeat - he said 'Sway were just to strong for our young hythe side who played well above and beyond my expectations . Some of the fielding was excellent which lead to some impressive run outs. A big thanks must go to Chiv and Matt Howe for scoring and umpiring and giving up their own time'. Jonjo's keeping was decent too for someone who had not kept for years.
