CADNAM JOIN WOODHOUSE TROPHY FOR 2011

2011 will see the Tony Woodhouse Trophy become a 4 team event as we are delighted to see Cadnam Sunday 2nd XI come on board to join Hythe, Fawley and Sway.

Hythe & Dibden won the trophy last season for the first time in 5 years and the Hythe youngsters will face a real challenge on their hands to defend the trophy.

Steve Chiverton says ' I am delighted Cadnam have decided to join for next season. We had two good friendlies against them last year and they play their Sunday cricket in the right spirit and have a lot of good youngsters coming through.

Whilst many people believe Sunday cricket is on a downer - 2011 will be the 9th year of this competition - frightening, but I certainly think all the clubs have benefited in some way from this tournament'.

HISTORY

The Tony Woodhouse Trophy was set up in 2003 with the idea of Hythe using it to bring youngsters into adult cricket. Lawrence Read at Fawley has been doing it for years and together the two clubs invited Beaulieu to form a Triangular Tournament with the sides playing each other once. Now the tournament has moved 4 four clubs each playing each other twice.

Tony Woodhouse himself played for Hythe for nearly fifty years & during the last twenty it was spent in the Sunday 2nds playing with the youngsters.

Through the 80’s the team consisted of Tony, Alan Wiltshire and 9 colts representing Hythe 2nd XI which resulted in heavy defeats and some objections from the opponents. Yet Hythe ignored the complaints and many of the Senior players today benefited from those years of cricket. Tony never complained though – he was happy in the slips with the young lads running around the field and if they dropped a catch off his bowling, he use to shout ‘ never mind you’ll catch the next one’.

Hythe's winning side 2010 - nine of these lads also played colts cricket in 2010

  • Rules will be the same as normal Sunday Friendly Games with a 2.30 start, 5pm tea and 20 overs in the last hour of play.
  • No player who plays in the County Divisions 1-4 will be allowed to play excluding colts.
  • Teams must consist of at least 6 colts (Under 18)
  • No bowler to bowl more than 8 overs in the game to enable more people to participate.
  • A Winning Side will pick up 12 points
  • Bonus points for Batting will be achieved at 100-125-150-175-200. (altered for 2011)
  • For sides batting second winning with wickets in hand. A point will be added (max 5 batting in total) for every 2 wickets in hand
  • Bonus Points for Bowling will be achieved at 2-4-6-8 and 10 wickets. (altered for 2011)
  • If a game is postponed because of the weather both sides will collect 6 points.
  • If a game is stopped and cannot be finished then bonus points will count as well as the 6 points for a cancelled game.

A Few of my players asked the question - Why is there no share of the points for a drawn game ?

The idea is for colts to spend time in the middle and defend their wickets rather than needlessly giving it away which they would do chasing runs in 40 over games. To earn full points you have to win the game and that means bowling teams out.
