TONGS / YOUNG 138 PARTNERSHIP NOT ENOUGH

By Web - September 13 2010
A Brilliant 138 opening partnership between Sean Tongs and Matt Young (supported by runner Rob Saunders) was all in vain as Hythe were beaten by a very good OT's & Romsey side. OT'S Bbatted first scoring 236 for 7 despite Saunders 0-15 off 8. Tongs 87 & Young 55 were excellent in the chase and when Young departed at 138 - Harry Smith & Tongs added another 48 for the 2nd wicket. The chase however proved too much for the Green Caps and despite a massive six from Russell Moore Hythe fell just 7 runs short.

YOUNG / TONGS 138 PARTNERSHIP NOT ENOUGH AS HYTHE GO CLOSE

Sean TONGS 87

Hythe travelled to the Romsey Sports Ground on Sunday to face Southern League Clubside O.T's & Romsey in what was expected to be a tough fixture. Chasing 237 to win the Green Caps put up a great fist of it before going down by 7 runs.

Sean Tongs & Matt Howe put on 138 for the first wicket followed by 47 between Tongs and Harry Smith. Only a stunning catch dismissed Smith when Hythe looked in charge - but a great game and great performance from the Hythe lads

Rob Saunders took his side to the Romsey Sports Ground to face a very good young Romsey side. Romsey batted first facing Rob Saunders in good form and Russell Moore. At the 10 over mark the homeside had moved onto 43 for 0 despite Saunders first 5 overs going for only 9 runs. Hythe had to wait until the 17th over to get the breakthough when at 67 - J.Stewart was bowled by Josh Mead for 26.

15 year old Sam Long bowled 6 overs for 34 before being replaced by the more experienced Jonjo Stovell who bowled tripe - 3 overs for 36. Unfortunately the skipper brought on the wrong Stovell. Mead bowled well 5 overs 1 for 24 before being replaced by Harry Smith. At drinks Romsey had moved onto 83 for 1 with G.Eldridge looking menacing

Romsey brought up the 150 in the 28th over for the loss of one wicket. R.Newman scored a half century but in the 32nd over was bowled by Sean Tongs for 65. G.Eldridge brought up his hundred and sportingly retired to give the other lads a chance. Sam Long returned to remove M.Whytehead for 19 whilst Harry Smith in his final 2 overs captured 4 wickets as Romsey went for runs. Smith bowled Service 0, Mills 10 and Collins 0 - then had J.Whytehead well caught by Russell Moore for 0 - O.T's & Romsey 236 for 7 after their 40 overs. A good effort by Hythe when at one time 260 was on the cards - but Woodsy said he stopped at least 20 runs.

With 5.90 runs an over required Hythe took to the field with three batsman. Rob Saunders went out as a runner for Matt Young who joined Sean Tongs at the crease. Hythe were positive from the start with Saunders making the Guru run for everything. 38 for 0 after 10 then 96 for 0 at drinks - great start. Young brought up an excellent fifty which included 2x4's & 3x6's. At 138 in the 27th over Young was well caught and bowled by Service for 55. That brought Harry Smith to the crease. Tongs brought another fine fifty and with Smith took the score to 185 in the 33rd over before an excellent catch by Mills had Smith caught for 11.

At 192 Tongs was out stumped off a wide for 87 - great knock. Sam Long was run oput by Zac without scoring before Zac Millar was caught by Newman for 4 - Hythe 199 for 5 with 3 overs remaining. Russell Moore smashed a six and a four to give Hythe hope but in the gloom once Jonjo Stovell had failed with a reverse sweep and given out LBW for 9 Hythe chances were gone. 229 for 7 at the end just 7 runs short in a very good end of season game
