HYTHE XI vs LANGSTONE
Played @ Exbury
Sunday 5th September
STOVELL SHOW STUNS LANGSTONE
Jonjo STOVELL 63
Hythe entertained Langstone at Exbury on Sunday in an end of season friendly. Morning heavy showers put the game in doubt but credit to Langstone - they wanted to play and were willing to make the 25 mile journey.
Hythe won the game by 88 runs thanks largely due to the Stovell dup of Jonjo and dad Barry. Jonjo scored 63 in Hythe's 205 for 9 whilst dad Barry took 3-32 off 7 overs as the visitors slumped to 117 all out.
Rob Saunders won the toss and despite several showers elected to bat first in this 40 over contest. Hythe opened with Jonjo Stovell (after his groan the day before) and Andrew Woods (still trying to make double figures). Langstone bowlers Brydon and Ahmed started brightly and Woods was soon back in the hutch out LBW for 1. Stovell and Sam Mead added 33 before Mead was caught off Franklin for 18 - Hythe 44 for 2.
Hythe's innings was then secured with a 94 partnership between Stovell and Matt Young. Stovell brought up his fifty but with the score on 138 was out caught off Roland for 63. Moore was given out LBW for 3 - Hythe 147 for 4. Young then ran out Zac Millar for 10 and Barry Stovell fell for 6 as Hythe tried to pusj the score along. Young finally went for 56 making it a great batting weekend for him and Tom Richards run out Josh Mead for 0 leaving Hythe 205 for 9 at the close, Sean Tongs 10 not out.
Last season Langstone's winning draw was based around the opening partnership of Wellington and Barnard - This year both were back in the hutch with only 11 on the board. Moore bowled Barnard for 0 and had Wellington very well caught by Tongs for 5. Brydon 15 and Holland 12 added 28 before Holland was bowled by Josh Mead. Brydon was the caught by Richards off Woods for 15 as Hythe's two pie bowlers took control.
Stovell had Brown caught by Moore for 14 and guest Kev McCarthy was LBW to Woods for 9. Langstone 72 for 6. Stovell then had Cooper caught by Moore for 2 and then Mafsin stumped by Zac Millar for 6. Saunders bowled K.Stroud for 18 and when Millar stumped Mackie off Tongs for 6 Langstone were all out for 117. Skipper Neil Wellington described it as their worst performance of the season - probably why they accused the Hythe lads of taking the Mick but a decent game and thanks to Craig at Exbury for supplying us with a pitch..
