Sunday XI Gain Revenge For Last Seasons Thrashing With 8 Wkt Win

126 Run 2nd Wkt Partnership

A superb 126 run partnership between Ewan Bell and Sean Tongs saw Hythe to a comfortable 8 wicket win over County One side Bedhampton on Sunday gaining revenge for last seasons 111 run defeat. Regarded as one of Hythe's top fixtures of the season - Hythe restrict the visitors to 186 all out with Rob Saunders and Tim Bath taking three wickets each.

-------------------------------------------------------------

In Hythe’s annual fixture against Bedhampton the teams played on a fresh pitch after the previous day’s league game was rained off after only four overs. Stand-in captain Russell Moore lost the toss and saw his side put into the field.

Opening for Hythe were Rob Saunders and Richard Last and straight away Saunders got the break-through when he had Hovey trapped LBW for a duck. The next partnership saw Bedhampton slowly recover as Hythe kept the pressure on with Last being especially economical.

But before the end of his spell, Saunders struck twice more in one over with two catches off his own bowling to finish with figures of 3-32. Replacing the opening pair were Luke Mills and Tim Bath who both started well and kept the visitors under the cosh.

Bath made steady inroads into the Bedhampton innings as he picked up three wickets in just six overs while Mills also struck at the other end. Unfortunately, for Hythe the Bedhampton tail took some liking to the pair resulting in a bit of tap for the Hythe boys.

The Green Caps then turned to Adriaan De Jager and Tom Richards and it was the latter who made the crucial break-through when Bedhampton’s key man was caught by De Jager for 71. Once Richards picked up another wicket it was left to Matt Young to take the final one following a tidy spell as the visitors finished on 186 all out.

In reply, Hythe’s captain Russell Moore opened with himself and Ewan Bell in the tallest opening partnership in the club. The lofty pair played well through the early overs and despite scoring at just three runs per over, they saw off the dangerous opening pace attack from Bedhampton.

When Moore was dismissed for 16 the partnership had reached 41 and the good start was continued with the introduction of Sean Tongs. Tongs and Bell punished the weaker change bowling from the opposition and Tongs in particular putting on the acceleration as Hythe raced into cruise control.

Both players comfortably registered fifties in the game and the hundred partnership came up in good time as the Green Caps pushed well ahead of the required run rate. When Bell was finally run out for 74 the pair had put on 126 together and there was just 20 runs left to win.

Luke Mills then came in at number four and finished the job with a boundary with the hosts still left with plenty of overs to spare. Tongs ended unbeaten on 74 while Mills contributed a steady 14.

Well Done To Jack Knight Owen Too

A big well done too must go to Jack Knight -Owen. On Sunday morning Russell had 12 names down for the Bedhampton game when Kev McCarthy called with his Fawley Head on - 'Steve were two men short can you help'.

So Jack kindly turned out for the oilers against Locks Heath and quickly became a hero as Kev puts it. Locks Heath scored 201-6 (40 overs). In reply, Fawley collapsed (with 10 men) and at approx 55-5 (with Gates and Wayne Smith gone), Jack joined the mighty Dave Streather at the wicket. Jack was given his instructions to defend and give the strike (if possible) to Streaky against fellow County 1 opposition. Jack was the classic Brian Close hero. In a stand of approx 120 (Jack with 5), Dave was out caught on the boundary for 83.

Jack kept his wicket as 2 further wickets fell. Kev (last man in at 10) joined Jack at the wicket for the final over. Needing 16 to win in almost total darkness. At the close the Hythe partnership (unbeaten)got another 6 runs (with Jack finishing on 10 Not Out and Superkev on 3 Not Out). Falwey losing by 9 runs (192-8 )in a cracking game and Jack Knight-Owen written into the Fawley history books. He had seen 140 runs approx in his marathon innings!!
