Hythe 2nd XI Back On Track With Chalky Taking Wickets

Hythe and Dibden Second xi picked up a crucial victory away to Ringwood at the weekend with a fine four wicket win after an impressive team performance. Top bowling restricted the hosts to 158 all out with Wayne Effeny and Lee Powell picking up three wickets each before Matt Young’s unbeaten 50 brilliantly saw the Green Caps home.

Hythe lost the toss and took to the field with Russell Moore and Mike Edwards opening the bowling. Both seamers started well with Moore striking first after a catch from Wayne Effeny. He also had the number three trapped LBW but the batsmen was graciously recalled by Hythe Captain Mike Bowman for an inside edge.

Despite hitting Edwards for a six he did not cost Hythe any more as Edwards forced him to chop on soon after. Both the opening bowlers took their ten overs straight through with Edwards 1-28 and Moore 1-32 providing an economical start.

After drinks Hythe began to make big breakthroughs with Ringwood needing to push the score along. Bowling in tandem, Lee Powell and Wayne Effeny cut through the host’s middle order. Powell picked up the opening batsmen, well caught by James Page with the score 67-3. Then, with the Ringwood middle order favouring shots over the top of the field, Hythe struck time after time as all the catches were held in a superb fielding performance.

By the time Powell and Effeny had finished the hosts were eight down with Powell taking 3-33 and Effeny 3-(?). Ian White then bowled four tight overs as the last two wickets for Ringwood tried to boost their total. However, they came across James Page who picked up both wickets in his over with the Green Caps securing maximum points.

In reply, Hythe came up against a good opening pair with Day in particular impressing. But, Hythe’s opening pair of Mike Bowman and Matt Young played superbly to give the visitors the perfect start by seeing off the opening pair and yet still scoring regularly.

The first wicket did not fall until the 21^st over when Bowman was out for 33 with the partnership worth 64. Wayne Effeny came in and gave the score impetus with a quick 20 but his dismissal led to a middle order wobble as Hythe struggled to finish the game off.

Firstly, Mike Edwards was dismissed for a duck before Luke Mills gave away his wicket soon after. With Matt Young playing so well at one end the Hythe players just had to stay with him, but soon after he notched his fifty, the returning Day struck twice in two balls at the other end to remove both James Page and Richard Last.

However, any thoughts Ringwood had of snatching a win were put to bed quickly as Gary Howe entered the fray. Firstly he struck the hat-trick ball back over the bowler’s head for four, before hitting the final ball of his over for another boundary.

In the next over Howe struck two more boundaries in succession and after a single apiece for Howe and Young the game was won. Howe’s quick-fire 17 supporting an excellent innings from Young, who finished on 60 not out to guide the Green Caps home.
