Friday 23rd July
Jiggy's Bat First Plan Backfires
Hythe's second mid week game of the week saw them entertain Magdalen from Hertfordshire. With the tourists being a club that only plays Sunday cricket - skipper Adriaan de Jager elected to bat first but the plan soon backfired as Hythe only made 152 all out.
In reply the tourists powered to 88 for 0 but a spirited Hythe fightback set up a close finish as the tourists got home by 11 balls with only 3 wkts to spare.
Hythe opened the batting with 3rd XI pair Tony North and Paul Quinnell. But in the second over Northy was heading back to the pavillion bowled round his legs for 0. Quinnell and Richie Froggett then added 55 berore Frpoggett was caught off Hook for 34. - Hythe 55 for 2 off 11.
Matt Young 5 came and went very quickly then Quinnell fell for 20 caught off Park - Hythe 64 for 4 off 14. Tom Richards didn't fair much better bowled by Sinclair for 9 but a 63 run partnership between Adriaan de Jager & Zac Millar gave the Hythe score a better look. With 3 overs to go both player s fell - Millar for 34 run out by the big man (Woodsy) and de jager well caught off Sinclair for 36. Woods himself was run out for 3 and Stovell a duck as Hythe ended on a disappointing 152 for 9.
Hythe's bowling was boosted by having 3 1st XI players included in the side but Jiggy opened with McCarthy and Stovell. It wasn't to be Stovell's day as his 3 overs went for 21 as Magdalen got off to a flying start at 88 for 0 off 21 overs.
Hythe did then get the breakthrough - Whiteman stumped by Tony North off 'pie chucker' Woods for 22. One run later and the other opener C.Hogg was also out - caught by Zac Millar in the deep off Tom Richards for 54. Williams and Jones took the score to 117 off 29 when Saunders had Jones caught by de Jager for 12. Soon after it was 126 for 4 as Richards had Ahmed LBW for 1. Three more wickets then fell for 8 runs - de Jager bowled Williams for 21, Saunders bowled Scott for 2 before Froggett had Sinclair caught by Quinnell for 1 - YES QUINNELL - Magdalen 134 for 7 off 35. Sadly though there were no more wickets and the tourists had won by 3 wickets.
Good game - 20 more runs and maybe Hythe could have won
