TONY WOODHOUSE TROPHY

HYTHE SUN 2nd XI vs SWAY

Sunday 25th July 2010

Hythe Halt Brave Sway

Kieran Chalmers 58

In a tough encounter at Jones Lane a stubborn Hythe resistance held off a real gritty show by Sway as they grafted to halt Hythe's unbeaten run in the competition. Sway batted first scoring 201 for 5 and Hythe dug in to secure the draw at 140 for 9.

Despite the needle througout hands out to the Sway lads who clapped the Hythe lads off at the end knowing their chances of retaining the trophy for another year had disappeared.

Hythe and Dibden held on for a tense draw against Sway in the Tony Woodhouse trophy to keep them in pole position to bring the trophy back to Jones’ Lane. Hythe were outclassed for much of the game as Sway rattled up 201-5 before reducing the hosts to 16-5 but a fifty from Keiran Chalmers and support down the order meant the Green Caps held on by one wicket.

Hythe began well by winning the toss and fielding. Hythe started with Russell Moore and Keiran Chalmers but Moore was quickly rested for the later overs in the innings and replaced by Captain Jonjo Stovell.

It was Stovell who made the breakthrough after a superb reaction catch from Adie ‘Trev’ Trevanna and with Stovell picking up two more wickets in his spell of 3-19 Hythe were looking good. However, that brought in the impressive Dave Steadman and he hit a classy fifty as Hythe toiled in the field.

Tom Huxley and Keiran Chalmers picked up a wicket each but F Charlton came in and blasted a quick unbeaten 46 to take Sway to an imposing 201-5.

In reply, Hythe got into an awful mess. Despite Trev and Jack Knight-Owen starting well they were both then dismissed for six before three ducks in a row had the hosts reeling. Luke Mills, Zac Millar and then a golden duck from Tom Richards left Hythe on 16-5 with a long way to go.

Thankfully, Sway’s impressive opening bowlers S Naylor and Dave Steadman were rested for the end and Hythe could re-build against the change attack. Youngster Keiran Chalmers and Captain Jonjo Stovell made the most of the close field as they shared an important 54 run partnership that took the side to drinks.

Just an over later though and Stovell was dismissed. This brought Matt Young in and once again Chalmers built a partnership with him. The pair put on 62 runs together with Chalmers chalking up another fifty before his wicket fell with the score on 139.

Any thoughts of winning the game went out the window and defence was the key but with four overs still to go both Young , for a fine 26, and Tom Huxley were dismissed leaving the last wicket pair of Russell Moore and the injured Harry Smith to block out the game against Naylor and Steadman.

Both managed to take the game into the last over and with three balls to go Hythe managed to get Smith off-strike and allow Moore to face the final deliveries. He successfully negotiated them and the tension was lifted as Hythe held on by the narrowest of margins to keep one hand on the TW trophy
