Effeny Sees Hythe 2nd XI Back Onto Winning Trail & 23 Points

Wayne EFFENY 67

Hythe and Dibden Second Xl eased past bottom-of-the-table Boscombe with a comfortable five wicket win. The visitors decided to bat first but were dismissed for 143 before Wayne Effeny’s 67 saw the Green Caps home.

After losing the toss Hythe fielded first and opened with Russell Moore and Mike Edwards. The first break-through of the innings came via a direct hit from Ewan Bell with the score on 26.

With Moore ineffectual from the top-end, Edwards took the strike role and picked up the next two wickets with two clean bowled deliveries to leave the visitors on 31-3.

Replacing the pair were the experienced Ian White and Wayne Effeny and despite being hit for a six in his first over, White came back strongly and picked up two wickets including the dangerous B. Custard for 41.

At the other end, Effeny kept up the pressure and picked up two more wickets as Boscombe struggled to cope with his accuracy. By the time Edwards returned alongside Tim Bath the visitors were eight wickets down in the closing overs.

A final wicket for Edwards, who finished with 3-16 off 9 overs and a wicket for Tim Bath meant Hythe picked up maximum bowling points with just a couple of balls to spare.

In reply to Boscombe’s 143, Hythe opened with captain Mike Bowman and Matt Young. Unfortunately, Bowman was bowled for a duck with the score on 15 so Matt Young and new man Wayne Effeny had to rebuild.

They stayed together until the first over after drinks when Young was caught for 22 with the score on 54.

At this point Hythe threatened to make it difficult for themselves as, with Effeny in fine form at one end, wickets fell at the other with Mike Edwards and Luke Mills falling to leave the score on 84-4.

Finally, Effeny found a partner in James Page and they took the Green Caps to the brink of victory before the former was trapped LBW for a fine 67. A couple of overs later Ewan Bell finished proceedings with a one-bounce pull for four to seal a five-wicket win with James Page finishing 22 not out.
