UNDER 15'S TEST NEW MILTON 'A'

By Web - July 22 2010
Hythe Under 15's final game of the season against New Milton 'A' ended in a  19 run defeat. Not a bad effort from Froggies boys against an older and more experienced opponent. New Milton batted first and were reeling at 17 for 5 but like all good sides they recovered to 115 for 7. Josh Mead was the main destroyer 3-19, and Richard Jones 3-23. Hythe in reply made 96 for 9 with Richard Jones 29 and Kieran Chalmers 20 scoring half the runs

HYTHE UNDER 15's vs NEW MILTON 'B'

4th July @ Hythe

NO WALKOVER AS HYTHE GO CLOSE AGAINST NEW MILTON 'A'

Richard JONES  3-23 & 29

Hythe Under 15's put in a valiant effort before going down to one of the forests big boys - New Milton 'A' at Jones Lane. Hythe had the visitors 17 for 5 off 5 overs before New Milton recovered to 115 for 7. Richard Jones and Josh Mead taking 3 wickets a piece.

Hythe made 96 for 9 in reply with Jones 29 and Kieran Chalmers 20 top scoring but unfortunately the rest folded against some good bowling.

So to the last match of the season for the Under 15s with skipper Kieran Chalmers losing the toss for only the second time this season and being asked to bowl first.    Now that was a decision the the New Milton skipper was probably regretting after only 5 overs of the match had gone. Why? Because after 5 overs New Milton had made just 17 runs but had lost half their wickets with 5 down (4 of which were ducks!!). It was all down to some excellent bowling from Josh Mead and Richard Jones. It was a great spell with Josh picking up a clean bowled, an LBW and a caught behind by wicket keeper James Bidwell (first catch behind the stumps for James I believe). Richard on the other hand kept both his wickets to being clean bowled.

Unfortunately, Hythe then let New Milton off the hook as their No.4 batsman decided to go for broke and hit his way out of trouble which worked as he 42 not out in relatively quick time before retiring. In the meantime Richard picked up his 3rd clean bowled wicket of the match and Chris griffin picked up the only other wicket courtesy of a Richard Jones catch. This took New Milton to 7 wickets down but Hythe were not able to break the No 9 and No 10 partnership leaving a reasonable total of 115 to chase down. In addition there was also some good tight bowling from Kieran Chalmers and Mike Burke whilst Sam Long was unfortunate to be on the receiving end of some of the No 4s boundary hits.

And so to the run chase. Another match another new opener - this time it was Tom smith who walked to the middle along with skipper Kieran. Alas, after a few really good defensive shots Tom found his patience had run out far too quickly and went to get one away and was bowled out for nought. In came Richard Jones and just as the previous week he and Kieran put on a good innings building partnership. There were a smattering of boundaries and some very good running between the wickets as the pair put what must have been close to a 50 partnership. Richard was then caught out for 29 in the 9th over with the score on 53. In came Josh Mead who made a couple of runs before a complete mix up left Kieran running and diving full stretch for the crease but alas was run out for 20 (apology from Josh was duly delivered post match). Sadly Josh was unable to push the score on himself and he was bowled out for 2. Then, when Nathan Froggett and Mike Burke went for successive ducks Hythe were suddenly 6 wickets down.

A steadying partnership from Jack Knight-Owen and James Bidwell was useful but was unpicked all too soon as an excited Jack attacked one down the wicket and was duly stumped by the wickie.James was then out clean bowled for 10 and Chris Griffin was another who was unfortunately run out for just 1. By now Hythe were 9 down with too much left to do. However, Sam Long and Marc Reid posted a final flurry with Marc hitting his first and only boundary of the season leaving him on 5 not out and Sam wading in with a boundary or two leaving him on 10 not out. Final score was 96 for 9 leaving Hythe & Dibden Under 15s 20 runs short of victory in a game that was there for the winning....... Maybe next season, just maybe next season..........

That ends the Under 15s season but one they can take a lot from with a few wins and no horrible performances or results to recall. Let's remember they are a largely young team this season playing against older boys for the most part. Next season most of the team remain with the under 15s and will be combined with some very able members of the under 13s squad this season as they move up an age group. Fingers crossed I have a hunch for good things!
