Wednesday 7th July
LISKAERD vs HYTHE XI
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT AS HOWE SAVES BELLIE
Wednesday and we were sat in the bar at 12.30pm wondering what we were going to do all afternoon as rain fell outside but a call to say it was sunny at Liskaerd set us on our way - back into Cornwall to face Cornish Division 2 East side Liskaerd at Lux Park. True enough cross the Tamar bridge and suddenly the ground was dry. Captain for the day - Bellie - unbeaten as captain in Devon from 2007 now into Cornwall.
Things didn't start well though as Bellie lost the toss but thankfully Liskaerd invited us to bat. Adriaan de Jager opened with Richie Froggett and a strong start was expected. 39 was added in 8 overs before Froggett fell caught off Collins for 15. Richard Last hit 5x4's in a quick fire 22 - Hythe 73 for 2 off 16 and at drinks 93 for 2.
de Jager was joined by Luke Mills and the pair added 55 before de Jager feel for 56. Mills went tonto score 70 before being run out with the score on 192. Hythe finishing on 200 for 5 off their 40 overs thanks to a late 23 not out from Rob James.
With tea not ready Hythe took to the field for 10 overs and got the breakthrough in the 8th over when Howe bowled Masden for 14. Tea 21 for 1. Mike Edwards finished off his 8 overs after tea 0-28 bringing Matt Stark and Tom Porter into the attack. In the 12th over Holt was caught by Froggett off Stark for 0 and at 75 Mote gave Stark his second wicket - caught by Matt Howe for 19. 85 for 3 at drinks and the game again was evenly poised. Cornwall Uni player - J.Hine and 2nd XI captain S.Marchant then added 50 before Hine as bowled by Porter for a very good 50. Wickets started falling quickly but whilst Marchant was still at the crease Liskaerd had a chance.
Bellie was taking no chances - as he called for his main strike force of de Jager and Froggett. de Jager bowled Collins for 2 and Froggett then dismissed three before Marchant hit Froggie for 18 in one over to take him past fifty. With 6 needed off the final over Marchant could only take a single off Matt Howe leaving a very young number 11 - C.Coates to try and hit the winning runs - which he didn't and Hythe had won by 4 runs . Steve Marchant stranded on an excellent 61 not out inc 8x4's & 6x3's. Excellent finish to a good game and Bellie stays unbeaten
